    Norwegian police heighten preparedness

Norwegian police have received information which reveals that an unidentified group is planning an attack in Norway.

    - The police cannot as of yet confirm the authenticity of the information. We also do not know where an attack might happen, says the acting National Police Commissioner Vidar Refvik.

PST is continuously collecting more information and we hope that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible. The police must take this kind of information seriously even if it should become clear at a later stage that the information was incorrect. On the basis of the threat evaluation from the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) the police have implemented several preventative measures.

    More visible armed police

On Thursday afternoon the Norwegian National Police Directorate (POD) received reports from all police districts. These show that POD’s operational procedure has been followed up in the districts by calling in extra staff and planning for increased capacity. Many districts have also established crisis management units. Some of the measures the police have implemented will be visible to the public, such as more visible police at border crossings, train stations and airports. The reports also show that most police units involved in this operation are carrying fire arms.
    Local preparedness

All police districts have heightened preparedness and the following districts can provide more information:

Oslo police district has heightened preparedness and will have uniformed and civilian police units stationed at focal points and in central places. The same holds true for Nordre Buskerud police district.

The police in East-Finnmark have increased border control on the basis of the announced threat.

In Østfold police district the audience will primarily notice the heightened preparedness by the increased presence of police at border crossings on E6, E18 and Moss Airport Rygge.

Sunnmøre police district has strengthened the local cooperation with Avionor at Ålesund Airport Vigra, the local port authority, as well as other central actors, informs the acting Chief of Police in Sunnmøre police district, Ingar Bøen.

Vestfold police district has increased security at Sandefjord Airport and the ferry terminals in Sandefjord and Larvik.

Chief of Police in Midtre Hålogaland says that the most visible preparedness measures for the inhabitants will be at the border crossing at Bjørnfjell, at Harstad / Narvik Airport Evenes as well as Ofotbanen.

In Rogaland police district the heightened preparedness will be noticeable to the public in terms of visible police at Stavanger Airport Sola, in Risavika and at the food festival “Gladmaten” in Stavanger, informs Chief of Staff Egil Eriksen.

    Preventative measures

It is not unusual to receive information about planned attacks against specific countries. Creating a climate of fear and concern can sometimes be a goal in itself.

    - We understand that this can be a source of concern. The information the police has received does not contain concrete threats against objects or individuals. At the present time there is no reason to recommend the public to take any specific precautionary measures, says acting National Police Commissioner Refvik.

Terrorists from, or more likely in, Syria are believed to have left Syria to target a western country and Norway is the most likely destination. However, with the country on major lockdown, you'd have to wonder will they not divert to an alternative destination? Assuming the intelligence is correct.

A lot of other European born "fighters" in Syria at the moment, so this could situation could be repeated in a number of other countries in the next few weeks/months/years.

I'll be on my hols there soon!

Security is crazy apparently, but no major delays in airports as they are generally tight in Norway. But other borders are now slower to pass through (land, sea etc.)

The next two-three days are the most crucial apparently, they are said to have quite specific intelligence. Not a good time to be a muslim in Norway either.

Airspace over Bergen has been shut down as a precaution. Airport still operating just fine. Half a million tourists in Bergen this weekend.

All back to normal now thankfully:
The Norwegian Police Security Service said its evaluation showed no additional information to justify a specified threat to the country.

The police therefore continued its downgrading of the increased alert to a level in line with PST's last safety evaluation level from February.
