Price should be the absolute last consideration when you are planning a tattoo go for whats best not whats cheapest.

i Am dying to get this tattoo but im very wary in getting it as im sure if i didnt get a skilled tattoo artist it could go pear shaped very easy?
I would love recommendations from people on who yous think would do a great job and result in it looking awesome :)

it would also be good if the person or shop was in dublin but id be willing to travel if it would be really worth it.

    Hey folks,

Looking to get my first tattoo, have gone online to do some research which has just confused me further. Is there an artist or group of artists that are simply deemed the best in Ireland? Any help greatly appreciated!

What are you looking to get tattoo'd ?

Every artist is different and have different styles who people will recommend can vary greatly depending on the piece you want done.

What are you thinking of getting??
If it's just a bit of writing or something small nearly any tattoo place will do,
But if it's custom tattoo there's certain places that only do them RIGHT!!
In Galway where I am there's plenty of tattoo places but only 2 that I would go to!

I would like a Japanese scene on my right shoulder blade and lower if needs be, the loose idea is cherry blossom tree with a samurai below about to perform Seppuku, i would like to include his wife handing the blade and another samurai above him.

would you have any body in mind ?

    thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,224 ✭✭✭✭Marty McFly

I'm not sure if your looking for Japanese style or realistic.

For Japanese I'd look no further than Chris Crooks , second Joe Myler or Paul Aherne in spilled Ink.

From the sounds of what you want it won't fit on your shoulder blade.

hey guys anyone got good recomadtions on tattoo artists in dublin that are good at coverups, not really looking to rush into anything too soon. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,224 ✭✭✭✭Marty McFly

All depends on what your trying to cover it with ;). Also what you are trying to cover be prepared depending on the piece that it may require some laser treatments.

So I've been planning to get my first tattoo for ages, but keep getting worried I'll choose an artist that doesn't suit me or won't do a good job.

I've had several ideas of what to actually get. I thought I'd decided what I wanted (a native-american bull skull with some beads and other stuff around it) but then some people introduced me to the wonderful world of cultural appropriation, and I freaked out thinking my tattoo will end up offending someone..

So I did a ton more research and decided I'd like a kind of celtic-looking tattoo. I want to get a sun and moon, just black lines, with the sun and moon combined into one, and on the inside part of my lower arm, above my wrist, below my inner elbow. I had a few pictures, but I'm a new user here so I can't post them yet -_-

I definitely want a custom one. I like the lines in the pictures I have, so annoyed I can't post them! So I guess what I'm looking for is an artist who's good at the small details, and very good at line-work.
I'm very open to different designs and ideas, I'm not hung up on one particular idea that I refuse to have changed, my one MUST is just that it's a really beautiful looking piece. I can see myself getting a few tattoos in the future, and I really don't want to look back at my first and think "wow that was so ridiculous, and I didn't even pick a good artist". I'm just very picky about it being done really well.

I also have a question about styles and stuff. I probably sound like a right twat, but I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the whole world of tattooing before I start getting my own, so I can end up having some really great ones. So basically, I want this one in just black lines, but would this be ridiculous looking if I wanted a colour tattoo in the future? I keep trying to picture it, and I'm worried that if I get just black lines, maybe adding colour tattoos in other places might look a bit mish-mashy. I've been trying to learn about the different styles and stuff, but I sorta just like what I like, some of the tattoo ideas I love are colour, others are black lines, others are black and grey.. I don't want to end up looking like a big mess of styles.

Anyways, artist recommendations would be great, and any other tips. I'm in Dublin, but would be willing to travel for a great artist (somehow don't think I'll need to do that, seeing as Dublin is full of artists, but I'm willing!) price isn't an issue, I'll save up for a great artist if needs be.

    Cheers!

I'm not overly familiar with the artists from Dublin, but if i was looking to get a black line work tattoo done the only guy I'd go to is Paul O'Rourke in Allstar Tattoo in Limerick! He is an excellent artists and absolutely excels at this type of work. He is very proficient on different styles of this kind of tattoo!! see pics below, all Paul's work!

As for mixing styles, I would worry about that! if you like different styles of art and you think it looks good who cares what any one else thinks!!
I have 13 tattoos done by 8 different artists! All of the artists would have their own unique method and style of tattooing!
I have everything from japanese, traditional, religious, movie themed, script, sports theme and a few others with no essential "style" and they are a mix of "black and grey" and colour! :)

No worries. He usually needs a deposit to book but he might let you off with it since you're in Dublin - or at least recommend someone up there.. Dublin ink are supposed to be brilliant. Never got a tattoo from there but the piercer is good

    Hi Becca,

It's great that you're clearly putting some really careful thought into it!

I know what you mean about wanting a few different styles but not wanting to look like a mis-matched jigsaw. I'm having a bit of the same problem. I'd suggest cutting out sketches of your favourite ideas and placing them all side by side on a table, like a story-board, and seeing how well they work together and if you can bring any elements in that will create a unifying theme, like including your favourite colour in all of them, or some particular pattern of lines that can be incorporated into each of them?

Don't forget to post pics when it's done :)

Those are great. I have an old one on one arm that I got in two places, half sleeve and then a 3 quarter sleeve, years apart and two different artists and they don't quite match. I'd like to bring the task of updating both and trying to best make them match to the best artist I can find (don't want to be back on this arm a 4th time!)

Is there anyone of Paul O'Rourkes standard for that sort of line work in Dublin that would take the job? I know many don't like fixing existing stuff.

I am booked in with Isnard Barbosa in Dublin Ink for a realistic style black and white sleeve (skulls/statues/other stuff) but from looking extensively through his stuff online he actually seems to specialise in a more neo-traditional (is that it?) style.

Not doubting Isnard's abilities he is clearly top of his game and a brilliant artist, just wondering if he is best suited for what I'm after or should I look to someone else? Taking into account Remis is not contactable (2 months now).

I have a back piece I want too that I can use the Isnard appointment for if I go elsewhere for the sleeve :pac:

Thread merge has made my last two posts look related/crazy - just to be clear, two different queries, for two different arms :)

Yeah, just noticed that, sorry! Just trying to keep the forum from getting full of separate threats asking the same/similar questions!

Hey can anybody recommend an artist in Dublin who's great at realistic animal tattoos?
I've been to a couple of deadly artists recently but I thought I'd try somewhere different, and ask here in case anyone has someone in mind.
    Cheers!
