    "At my window
    Watching the sun go
    Hoping the stars know
    Its time to shine
    Daydreams
    Aloft on dark wings
    Soft as the sun streams
    At days decline"

    sometimes theres another line added somewhere in the middle;
"let the sky sing this song of mine"

Cant believe hotel california hasnt been mentioned yet!

    Mirrors on the ceiling,
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
    And in the master’s chambers,
    They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

    also elephant by damien rice

What's the point of this song? Or even singing?
You've already gone, why am I clinging?
Well I could throw it out, and I could live without
And I could do it all for you
    I could be strong
Tell me if you want me to lie
'Cause this has got to die

I said, this has got to stop
This has got to lie down, down
    With someone else on top

and if i could pick three id pick the whole hallelujah song!

For the sheer cheek, Bitter Sweet by Roxy Music

He compares love/passion/regret with wine and then goes into a rant in German rhyming wine with "Nein" :D:

"How rich in contrast love can be, I'm almost quite amused to see it twist and turn, to taste both sweet and dry.

These vintage years, lovers, you consume my friend as others their wine... (pause)

NEIN! - das ist nicht das ende der welt!"

It's maybe one of those - 'you'd have to hear it' ones :o

Also, From Bowie's portrait of paranoia/obsession etc Scary Monsters:

"She asked me to stay and I stole her room. She asked for my love and I gave her a dangerous mind"

Not deep or anything - just sounds great.

Pretty much anything by Billy Bragg I could put in this thread, right now I'm thinking Waiting for the great leap forwards though.

It may have been Camelot for Jack and Jacqueline
But on the Che Guevara highway filling up with gasoline
Fidel Castro's brother spies a rich lady who's crying
    Over luxury's disappointment
So he walks over and he's trying
To sympathise with her but he thinks that he should warn her
That the Third World is just around the corner

In the Soviet Union a scientist is blinded
By the resumption of nuclear testing and he is reminded
That Dr Robert Oppenheimer's optimism fell
    At the first hurdle

In the Cheese Pavilion and the only noise I hear
Is the sound of someone stacking chairs
    And mopping up spilt beer
And someone asking questions and basking in the light
Of the fifteen fame filled minutes of the fanzine writer

Mixing Pop and Politics he asks me what the use is
I offer him embarrassment and my usual excuses
    While looking down the corridor
Out to where the van is waiting
I'm looking for the Great Leap Forwards

Jumble sales are organised and pamphlets have been posted
Even after closing time there's still parties to be hosted
You can be active with the activists
Or sleep in with the sleepers
While you're waiting for the Great Leap Forwards

One leap forward, two leaps back
Will politics get me the sack?

Waiting for the great leap forwards

Here comes the future and you can't run from it
If you've got a blacklist I want to be on it

Waiting for the great leap forwards

It's a mighty long way down rock 'n roll
From Top of the Pops to drawing the dole

When you're waiting for the great leap forwards

If no one out there understands
Start your own revolution and cut out the middleman

Waiting for the great leap forwards

In a perfect world we'd all sing in tune
But this is reality so give me some room

Waiting for the great leap forwards

So join the struggle while you may
The Revolution is just a T-shirt away
Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards
Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards...

"If I could make it rain today,
And wash away this sunny day down to the gutter, I would.
Just to get a change of pace.
Things are getting worse but I feel a lot better,
And that's all that really matters to me."-Adam Duritz.

THis song has been in my head all day so they were the first lyrics that came to me when i saw this thread. I don't know why I like these lyrics, but their delivery and what's being said conveys a sort of disconnection to everyday life that I can relate to at times.

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
    I know you'll be a star,
    In someboday else's sky,
But why can't it be mine?

    "Black" - Pearl Jam.

I've always loved the fairly blunt opening lines of the Verve's Bitter Sweet Symphony...

"Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die"

Bleak, direct and challenging (all sung over that glorius string loop!)

Ok how about this classic bob dylan verse from "Tombstone blues"

The Commander-in-Chief answers him while chasing a fly
Saying, "Death to all those who would whimper and cry"
And dropping a bar bell he points to the sky
Saving, "The sun's not yellow it's chicken"

That would probably be my favourite at the moment...either that or

    In an mmmbop they're gone
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there
In an mmmbop they're gone. In an mmmbop they're not there

These lyrics always put me in a good mood!

Mr. Mojo Risin', Mr. Mojo Risin'
Mr. Mojo Risin', Mr. Mojo Risin'
    Got to keep on risin'
Mr. Mojo Risin', Mr. Mojo Risin'
    Mojo Risin', gotta Mojo Risin'
Mr. Mojo Risin', gotta keep on risin'
    Risin', risin'
    Gone risin', risin'
    I'm gone risin', risin'
    I gotta risin', risin'
    Well, risin', risin'
    I gotta, wooo, yeah, risin'
    Woah, ohh yeah

Oh to dance beneath the diamond sky,
    With one hand waving free,
    Silhouetted by the sea,
    Circled by the circus sands,
    With all memory and fate,
    Driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.....

Doesn't get much more beautiful than that. Nobody comes close to Dylan in this regard really.

Some great ones so far...especially the Dylan ones!

It's tricky to pick a favourite but I'd like to go for 2 really nice bunches of lines anyway..

Crosby Stills And Nash - Helplessly Hoping
    "Helplessly hoping
    Her harlequin hovers nearby
    Awaiting a word
    Gasping at glimpses
    Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye
    "

Gregory And the Hawk - Boats and Birds
"If you'll be my star, I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black, and you show of your light
I live to make you shine.."

Just an idea i had.....This can be any song by any artist, and explain why you chose the line/verse.

Mine has to be - Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan

You gotta lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin'
You gotta lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just wanna be on the side that's winnin'
You say I let you down, you know it's not like that
If you're so hurt why then don't you show it?

I picked this verse because i find it hugely relevant to stuff that went on in my life in the past. Brilliant lyrics!
I read somewhere that this is Roy Kean's favourite song.

"Now our luck may have died and our love may be cold
But with you forever Ill stay
Were goin out where the sands turnin to gold
Put on your stockins baby, `cause the nights getting cold"

"Used to play in a rock n' roll band,
    but they broke up
We were young and we were wild,
    It ate us up"

"Early one mornin' the sun was shinin',
    I was layin' in bed
Wond'rin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red."

"Sometimes I feel..... like I don't belong anywhere.
And it's gonna take.... so long for me to get to somewhere.........

Sometimes I feel so heavy hearted.., but I can't explain cuz I'm so guarded.
But that's a lonely road to travel, and a heavy load to... bear.

And it's a long, long way to heaven but I gotta get there.....
    Can you send an angel.....?
Can you send me an angel...... to guide me."

    Prelude to A Kiss-Alicia Keys

Haha! True!! But I really do feel it was!!!!
I'm sure you've listened to a song and thought wow, that's exactly what I'm feeling right now!
    Although maybe I'm just a weirdo:p

"And I've lost my St. Christopher
    Now that I've kissed her"

Tom Traubert's Blues - Tom Waits

Definitely my favourite single line, says so much using so little

    Also:

"Well they built the Titanic to be one of a kind
But many ships have ruled the sea
They built the Eiffel Tower to stand alone
But they could build another if they please
The Mona Lisa, The David, The Sistine Chapel
    Are unique I suppose
But when they built you brother
    They broke the mould

...they say you can't take it with you, but I think that they're wrong
Cause all I know's I woke up this morning, and something big was gone"

    Terry's Song - Bruce Springsteen

Straightforward enough for a eulogy track I suppose but at the time (last year) that the album was released I had just recently had a friend pass away and I guess it rang through particularly with me as a result. It was great to have a ready to go track there at my disposal I guess!

At the moment I'm in love with Modest Mouse- Issac Brock is a ridiculously talented lyricist imo.

    For example, the simple line
"The universe is shaped exactly like the Earth,
If you go straight along enough you'll end up where you were
    " -3rd Planet
somehow blows my mind every time. It just seems like such a strange, but accurate, observation to make. Maybe it's the way he sings it too. I don't know.

And on a more depressing note, Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins never fails to hit me right in the emotions:

"I felt for sure last night,
    That once we said goodbye...
No one else will know these lonely dreams,
No one else will know that part of me.
    I'm still driving away,
    And I'm sorry every day.

    I won't always love...these selfish things.
    I won't always live....not ...stopping...

I won't always love, what I'll never have.
I won't always live, in my regrets.

You'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time,
    What are you hoping for?
I'm here, and now, I'm ready,
    Holding on tight.
Don't give away the end...the one thing that stays mine
    " - 23
It's so simultaneously bitter and hopeful that I can't help but love it.

I've been listening to a lot of Bon Iver recently. He is a really talented songwriter.

The wolves (act 1 and 2) is the song i keep coming back to particularly for these verses

"someday my pain, someday my pain
    will mark you
harness your blame, harness your blame
    and walk through"

"and the storys all over you
in the morning i'll call you
cant you find a clue when your eyes are all painted sinatra blue"

    He's the shiz:)

"Did they get you to trade
    Your heroes for ghosts
    Hot ashes for trees
Hot air for a cool breeze
    Cold comfort for change
    Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage"

-Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd

    Great Thread :)

love the whole song of "All I know" by Art Garfunkel
"I bruise you, you bruise me
    we both bruise to easily
to easily to let it show
i love you and thats all i know"

"when the singers gone, let this song go on
its a fine line between the darkness and the dawn
they say the darkest night, is a night beyond
but the ending always comes at last
    endings always come too fast
they come to fast and they pass too slow
i love you and thats all i know"

    - also honky tonk - the stones
"I met a gin soaked, bar-room queen in memphis,
She tried to take me upstairs for a ride.
She had to heave me right across her shoulder
cause I just cant seem to drink you off my mind"

    - finally "where the stars go blue" by gavin mcgraw

"dancing where the stars going blue, dancing where the evening feel
dancing in my wooden shoes, in a wedding gown"

i could post for a week here :)

    I was delayed, I was way-laid
    An emergency stop
I smelt the last ten seconds of life
I crashed down on the crossbar
And the pain was enough to make
    A shy, bald, buddhist reflect
    And plan a mass murder
Who said lied I'd to her ?

Morrissey is up there with the greatest songwriters....always a touch of humour in amongst the despair

Do you find it there in the sea of faces
    That drowns you every day
In the silence and rumble and empty spaces
    Where children and rotweillers play
Is it buried in the praise given so cheap
In the meaningless movement of the jaws
In the looking glass that flatters you
Or the rattle of hollow applause.....
......And I'm thinking 'bout the bullet and the TV screen
The dollar and the clenched fist
And if we're searching for peace how come we still believe
    In hatred as the catalyst.......
......And I feel it in the pit of my stomach and in the ditch in my mind
Inside the chamers of my heart as I stare half blind
    At these walls of cardboard
At this space that I have rented
At your beauty that is crumbling
Though you try so hard to prevent it

David Gray - Let the Truth Sting - reflects modern society so well

But freedom, oh freedom, well thats just some people talking

Eagles - Desperado - delivered perfectly & so true

Can I look down to you as you look down on me
Can I feel into you as you felt into me
I can help what you see, I can't help but to be
For what I needed to need

Smashing Pumpkins - Love - one of my all time favourite songs about unrequieted love. Love the first line of it too: To my mistakes, to my mistakes of cowardice

    The road is dark
And it's a thin thin line
But I want you to know I'll walk it for you any time
    Maybe your other boyfriends
    Couldn't pass the test
Well if you're rough and ready for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest

Bruce Springsteen, Tougher then the Rest. love the song, always makes me think about the other half, yes i am a sad soppy bastard at heart haha

    This is our last embrace,
must I dream and always see your face
Why can't we overcome this war
Baby, maybe it is just because I didn't know you at all

Jeff Buckley, Last Goodbye. again, i just love the whole song but i figured its too long to write everything!
