I think you might have a little stint in that photo. Bird on the right is a sanderling but the other looks like a little st. What do other think?

100% correct. Bird on left is juvenile little stint, you can see the white mantle V's. The bird on right is a sanderling in transitional plumage.

Reposting 2 photos - did a bit of work to enhance but they look the same as before!

Sincere Apologies for the disjointed way I have posted ....

Just wondering then if the bird on the right in these photos might be a little stint- I must say I find it impossible to differentiate between similar looking birds

They are all Sanderling - two moulting adults and two juveniles. In the top picture, the adults are the first and third birds from the left. You can see the odd black feather from the breeding plumage still on the back, while the juveniles have pristine plumage (and some cinnamon shading on the neck/throat).

A large flock of Golden Plover arriving on the Curragh yesterday evening:

These birds are notoriously shy and nervous,so it's extremely difficult to get close without spooking them.
The following images have been cropped quite heavily:

Bonedigger, what a terrific sight..I haven't seen Golden Plover in our neck of the woods (wicklow coast) for over forty years and then it would be just a handfull with the much larger flocks of Lapwing which, incidentally, have started to reappear albeit in much smaller numbers.

I always enjoy seeing these little birds at this time of year on the Curragh.
Funny enough,we see more of these than we do Lapwings, which haven't arrived yet,but I'm sure will join the Golden Plover shortly.

Often the Golden Plover flock in the Curragh has an American Golden Plover. Hard to get near enough to the flock though.

Kilcoole gets decent numbers of Golden Plovers. In early spring in the fields you will see many in Summer plummage

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,003 ✭✭✭Zoo4m8

Very good, guess they prefer the Kilcoole fields to the Greystones fields!
I suppose the images I had were of the large winter flocks of Lapwing that we used to get.
I reckon the area you mean would be the fields around the breaches..I don't get to visit down there in spring, too busy!, late summer, winter is my time.
