Wait a minute, does the Elder Scrolls MMO mean there'll be no more single player elder scrolls games? Screw that.

No the ES MMO is being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios while the normal Elder Scrolls games are developed by Bethesda.

Ah that's good to know. I have no interest in MMOs.

Would love to see a new engine being used and what better time than next gen. I wasn't into skyrim much, much prefer the world of Fallout. Just hope it doesnt take too long to cone out.

I too would love to see a proper end to Gamebryo but the thing is it's ridiculously easy to develop mods for it so hopefully that if they do move to a completely new engine, it won't be too steep a learning curve.

Fallout 4 has been trademarked in Europe by Bethesda apparently.

Along with a new engine, please Bethesda, do something about your lacklustre melee combat. Really lets some of their games down (although more prevalent in TES obviously).

I've always felt if Deep Silver (Dead Island) and Bethesda joined forces they would make the best melee system ever. Both of them individually are fairly underwhelming but one lacks what the other excels in imo :P

Dark Souls did it better then either of those games. I know it's 3rd person, but still.

Dark souls was a brilliant game but it's character battle animations were stilted, stiff and quite old fashioned. They should not be emulated. Characters, limbs and weapons clipped through each other constantly and if It was viewed in first person it would be even more noticeable.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,055 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Oh there's definitely room for improvement, and it would need to be changed a lot for 1st person, but it's still probably the best example of melee combat. There's a good weight to everything you do, and if they could manage to get that across, it would be brilliant.

However, i think that's more an issue for the next Elder Scrolls. Fallout is all about the guns.

If there's any game's melee combat they should take some advice from it's Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. The problem with the melee in Bethesda games is that it sucks at a very core level, perhaps in the engine, and that's why even though there's plenty of mods that make it a hell of a lot better, it's still just CLICK ON ENEMY. Upgraded your melee skill to max? Still just a default animation, default effect swing using tactics from when you started.

The blocking and attacking just seems so... one directional. Parrying is not reliable in them and there's not even any proper way to dodge, so when facing tougher enemies it just comes down to numbers... which is not a good thing - I guess that's where they could learn from Dark Souls since it's possible to beat anything in that game at any level if you REALLY put your mind to it... the fact that it's possible is just a great thing in my opinion - it makes you feel that there's no place where you're like "I shouldn't be here yet, have to grind," well, you might feel that tbh, but you know it's because of your skill level and not because it's impossible.

To what Kiith said... there needs to be more 'weight' to Bethesda combat. Dark Souls does that well. There's a few mods for Skyrim that make heavier melee sounds when they hit shields and armour, and a really huge overhaul that makes the game super hard (and generally incompatible with other mods) that has stamina drain for every attack, not just power attacks - which makes it feel a LOT different.

Fallout has particularly bad and inaccurate shooting. I know it's an RPG styled game but damn... shooting someone 3 times in the face with a shotgun and them still charging at you feels dumb. Enemies always have infinite ammo and no understanding of tactics regarding cover when reloading, positioning, cover fire, team tactics, retreating.

NV was an improvement as the landscape in Fallout 3 got a bit boring. The ruined city just looks the same after a while.
I got a dlc bundle for NV and made the mistake of playing the one where you wake up with the collar on. It was a pain as you have speakers that blow up the collar, minimum ammo and crappy weapons. I need to go back and check the other dlc but that one put me off.

That's the one I've yet to finish. Enjoyed the others quite a bit

Anyway, as for the new one, I was happy enough with 3 and NV to begin with. Both suffered from scaling issues in the higher levels. Fix that, give me more of the same story wise and maybe tweak the combat just a bit and I'll buy it. Who am I kidding, I'll buy it anyway, but it'd be nice to fix the long running issues.

I see what they were trying to do but it was just less fun than NV.

Not to be off topic but I found skyrim unplayably boring.. This was after 300 hours in oblivion and around 50 in Fallout 3.. It was beautiful, but not in any way exciting or suspense filled..
Don't get me started on the HORRIBLE UI..
Skyrim graphics, Oblivion style quests and fallout 3 UI would bd a dream fallout 4. I'be never played new Vegas, ordered it on
Amazon last week and cant wait!

Oblivion got very samey and the gate worlds all looked the same. You could limit your character by trying to dual skill. The chat system was crappy too.

I didn't do gates after maybe 5. There was no reward. But oblivion had great Easter eggs, dlc and BRILLIANT quests. Hi Guild quests

Yeah the VATS with slow mo kills is a class system.

Do ye think they should have some sort of transport in Fallout 4? TES has horses, would mad max style motorbikes work for FO or would it get too Borderlandsy?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

I liked the fact you had to wander around - the fast travel system alleviates the need for horses/motors.

These games are at their best when you're walking from A to B and end up coming across C, D, E and Z.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,480 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Yeah, as long as there are interesting things/places to find, I don't mind going for a stroll, ups the tension as well.

i still haven't 'discovered' a huge chunk of new vegas, every time I play it I end up walking past the strip.. wander inside.. get bored, get bored of the game and then uninstall it

be nice if there was a mod that removed the strip from the game.. i'd probably play it loads then

I dont know if thats something id like to see being honest, half the fun of fall out 3 for me was wandering around finding places :D also horses didnt feel for me in skyrim which is why I never used them.

There was a good mod to summon a horse so you didnt have to mind them. I guess it will depend on the size of the map. Maybe something like far cry 3 but bigger.

Thread followed, but I know it's going to do nothing but tease me until I see a confirmed release date.

Remember looking to trade in PES 2008 (sh1te) on the Xbox and picking up FO3 and reading the back of it and thinking it sounded like something I'd like. Have never regretted it since walking out of that Vault. Never actually got to finish NV, but enjoyed every second and loved the weapon improvements like the AM Rifle etc. On the other hand, there was 'Caravan'. Christ, I never want to see that again.

As regards cars etc, I don't think I'd be for that. As someone said, the beauty is going from A to B but endind up at Z before you got there - you'd miss so much whizzing about on a car or bike. Maybe a mission or two to escort a trader or doctor or something. That said, I'd prefer to limit the fast travel to being able to buzz about from town to town on a bus rather than from anywhere in the wild.

You can only drop fast travel if you have no inventory management. It would work for far cry 3 but not skyrim as you fast travel to your stotage location. It would also depend on the map size.
