Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

3mm Marine Ply?

    I'm about to start an interesting project and I need two or three sheets of 3mm marine ply for boatbuilding.

    BS 1088 and/or Okoume ply seem to be recommended.

    I can find 4mm ply at timberireland.ie but I can't find any retailer of the 3mm stuff.

    Any recommendation where I can buy some? Dublin area preferred.

    Very good! I checked the shopping list:
    I am gonna need 3 sheets of 3mm ply and one sheet of 4mm ply. I'll get onto those two sources Fergal, thanks.

    I also need a few stringers ('sheer clamps') 12 by 18mm by 4.5m long with strength while light, and no knots. I love abbey woods in baldoyle (wood porn LOL) and Whatya think of douglas fir?

    Yep douglas fir is perfect for stringers thats what I used, don't be too worried about a few knots you can take them out and fill up the holes with epoxy without loosing any strength.

    Uh-uhhhh it's not looking good for the 3mm marine ply.

    I've phoned around, several places stock 4mm ply but no-one stocks ("or has ever stocked") 3mm BS1088 ply.

    I can buy it in the UK at about 40 Stg per sheet but shipping is quoted at about 150 quid sterling :eek:

    Dunno what to do now! :(

    there are some serious bends in the ply per the design, the plans say thou shalt use 3mm ply or it won't form the correct shape.

    And there's a weight penalty with 4mm ply.

    But I can buy the 4mm in the morning....

    Ok some research done, with 'dry heat bending' the curves might be possible in 4mm ply. I'll shoot an email off to the designer.
