No, when Egan was beaten by Ward in the Irish nationals, that was it for him

So the place goes to that Bosnian fella?

Surely it would make more sense to give a place to everyone in the world top 100 or whatever with a minimum of one place for each country.

100 boxers in a tournament? So 1,000 in total? Its just not possible.

Every boxer in the world has a chance to qualify. Most have 2. Its fair enough

I can see the point though, given the sometimes arbitrary scoring that happens in boxing, as well as the fact that in certain sports (such as athletics) there are a lot more opportunities to reach the required standard. Just imagine if Taylor in the woman's side got knocked out of the world championships early, the women only have one opportunity to qualify

By the way, I know they've been entered for Helsinki but does anyone know if the Irish men's 4x400m team have any chance of qualifying for London?

Their chance of qualification is slim....they would need to comfortably beat the Irish record on 2 occasions for them to even be in the running for the 16th and final place in London 2012.

The Irish record set back in 2002 is 3:03.73mins.
In order to sneak into the top 16 qualifying positions, the Irish squad would need to dip under 3:02.50mins twice before the July 2nd deadline. The Euros don't finish until July 1st and since they don't have another time from the past year to bank on the short answer to your question is no, they won't qualify.

Well athletics and swimming are the only sports like that. Most sports use a tournament and/or rankings. There really isn't a better way for boxing (as the rankings are a joke).

Yes, it is difficult to ensure that all of the best boxers get through the qualifying system..... perhaps one way of improving it would be to do what they do in shooting sports....hold a few qualification tournaments throughout the year with less quota places available at those events. Over the course of those events, the cream would be given every chance to rise to the top. Say, for example, 4/5 qualification tournaments with 3 quota places available at each....there would still be enough scope for the AIBA to ensure continental quotas are not affected.
I think the problem was that there was too much emphasis on the 2011 World Championships....there were too many quota places awarded at those championships meaning that there was no room for error/injury at the last qualification tournament in April.

Except that, given the corrupt history of boxing, including Olympic boxing, it would probably help if :
    1. The highest and lowest score were eliminated, as in ice-skating.
    2. As far as practicably possible, nations were not allowed to compete at home.

    2) Somewhere has to host it...

    1) Do you understand how amateur boxing is scored? It seems not...

Amateur boxing is no more corrupt than any other sport

Dan, being a diplomatic gentleman, would have responded as follows : " feargale, a new scoring system was introduced in 2011. Now each judge relays his/her reckoning at the end of each round, with no time limit on recording hits. The three most similar scores are averaged, discounting the verdicts of the other two judges."
Watch this space for my reply to Dan.

The Olympic tripartite commission place that for a European boxer at 81 Kg that Joe ward was hoping for went to Boško Drašković of Montenegro. He was informed last week.

Interesting. He was disqualified in 2nd round (against an Indian, who lost in next round to Hooper of Australia, who lost in QF to the winner from Cuba)

USA lightweight Queen Underwood has been handed a wild card entry for London 2012. The American caused Bray’s Katie Taylor problems at the 2010 World Women’s Championships in Barbados and was ahead on points before Taylor eventually won the bout. Underwood will probably not be seeded in London and could face Taylor in her first fight. (Irish Times)

Katie is seeded and so will avoid the first round. Underwood can't face Taylor in her first fight.

Dong from China, Outbil from Morocco and Lactacus from Romania also got wildcards...Gulsum Tatar the experienced fighter from Turkey misses out.

"Except that, given the corrupt history of boxing, including Olympic boxing", it would probably help if Fred Tiedt were asked his opinion on the foregoing, as well as Kim Dong-kil and Lofti Ayed.
"1. The highest and lowest score were eliminated, as in ice-skating." Yes, the highest and lowest, not the two furthest out.
"2. As far as practicably possible, nations were not allowed to compete at home." The European qualifiers were held in Turkey and the Asains in Kazakhstan. No great reason not to locate them vice-versa.

No but Taylor can face Underwood in her first fight. At least I think thats what it meant!

    Yep.

With the wildcards being issued, everybody who Taylor beat at the 2012 Worlds is in the Olympics (inluding the injured Romanian giving Katie a Walkover)

Anyone with BBC red button coverage can watch Irish triathlete Aileen Morrison in action at the World Series race in Kitzbuhel.
She's in the chase group on the bike (18th place at last checkpoint) and racing strongly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,076 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dan man

Aileen Morrison finished 14th today in World Series race in Kitzbuhel. Strong performance from her on bike and run where she made up some ground....she just missed lead group on the bike and she could have been in contention if she just made that lead pack after swim.
All in all, a very good performance by Aileen. She's up there with the best in the world.
Going to be really exciting to see how she goes at the Olympics...she's a good prospect, definitely top 10 at least on her day but there's always a fine margin in triathlon....a couple of seconds lost in swim or in transition phases could be difference betwen a medal and finishing outside top 20.

Andrzej Jezierski is through to the European Sprint Canoe Final in C1 200m after finishing 2nd in his semi-final and is 3rd fastest qualifier overall.... if he medals at these championships then he'll be a real contender for London 2012.

40.2 is an unreal time for that, considerably faster than he was going at the world cups earlier this year.

Great performance considering Europe is the overwhelming powerhouse of canoe sprint.....he beat the Polish guy too! He's in the mix for London.

Looks like Matt Brammeier's appeal to make the Olympic road cycling squad hasn't been settled after all.....via his twitter:
After successfully appealing under the Cycling Ireland criteria, an appeal was lodged last week to the Olympic Council of Ireland......
Until such a time as that process has run its course, I will not be in a position to comment any further........
My appeal is being dealt with by my management company Trinity Sports Management. For any other queries go to them. DON'T ASK ME!! :-)

Glad to hear there's still a chance he could make the Olympic team...he won his third successive Irish title today further underlining how bizarre it is that he hasn't been selected for London.
