Hi all,

Acoustic Pickup

    I've only ever played acoustic guitars so I need some advice.

    I'm looking at two options. Putting a pickup into an existing acoustic guitar or buying an acoustic electric?

    Is it worth putting a pickup (what kind? I don't know) into an acoustic guitar I have. What kind of quality sound would that have? Or for the price it would cost for a good one, would it be just easier to get a cheaper acoustic electric guitar?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    I was in a similar position two years ago. I came to the conclusion that id could probably buy (second hand) a guitar with a pickup for not much more than the cost of a pickup and peamp.

    I got a really nice Tanglewood TW55 with a fishman classic 4 for €150. A steal I think. I doubt I would have got that pickup and pre for less.

    But I think it depends on what your starting off with. I was starting from a Yamaha fg730. A nice enough guitar but not particularly special. I didn't think it was worth the investment.

    If you already have a really nice guitar it may be worth considering. If your starting like me with a run of the mill acoustic then I doubt its worth the investment and possibly doing damage to a perfectly fine guitar.

    You could sell, or hold onto your guitar as a secondary instrument.
