Sorry to see no responses to your query cos I'm wondering about the same thing myself. I've heard that they are very smokey and don't give off alot of heat unless you are sitting right in front of the fire. The chimneas that have an open grate all around (if you know what I mean!) give off more heat.

Someone suggested a drum might be better for heat and less smoke....anyone know if thats true??

As far as I know - but I can be corrected on this, a lot of patio heaters have been withdrawn from sale on environmental ground - makes sense if you think about it........
The chimnia type thing can be very smokey but it depends on weather conditions.
