An exquisite choice, though I would recommend you pick up an arcade stick for that one else you won't benefit from the best possible experience playing it.

How much do the DC arcade sticks go for?

Go for the 'Green Goblin' (AKA the official stick). I paid £25 plus postage from the UK for mine I think.

These items landed on my desk today. A Saturn, ready for SHMUP ACTION and a copy of Samurai Aces, new, sealed and CIB.

Also got Halo 2 steelbook and Capcom vs SNK Millenium to fill the packet. :)

Get yourself Soukyugurentai. Not too expensive but still one of the saturns best. Not sure of the price of these but Salamander Collection, Batsugun, Silhouette Mirage, Thunderforce V, Battle Garegga, Layer Section/Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, Metal Black, anything Parodius, Game Tengoku.

If you really want to go bananas there's always the awesome version of Hyperduel on the saturn and Radiant Silvergun.

If you want to go all out and get the absolute daddy of saturn games and the one that no collection is complete without then you really must get Cho Aniki.

Exactly! The game is so amazing that it brings a smile to the face of anyone that plays it. Radiant Silvergun is widely regarded as the best shmup on the saturn by people that don't know games while the shmup experts will tell you that cho aniki is by far and away the bst thing on the system.

If only Dinorex was released on Saturn, the it would be the greatest console ever

Is the Saturn port of SFA3 considered the best?

Due to 60hz and the extra RAM is it?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 50,776 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It works with the 4 MB Ram cart so it's missing none or at least very little animation frames and it pretty much arcade perfect. The PS1 port is good for the console but there's loads of frames of animation dropped and it runs at 30 frames per second unlike the saturn port that belts along at 60 frames per second. Also the PS1 uses polygons instead of sprite hit boxes to save memory and some experts find the hit boxes a little off because of this.

There's a section on the US PSN store called 'Imports' that has a collection of Japan-only PS1 games available for download. There's not many major shmups on there - a handful - and few of the big name ones, but they do have Cho Aniki, which I find peculiar.

Ah Saturn shmups, is there anything better? I'll have to start buying them again.

Would love to pick up Battle Garegga. Although that's another super expensive one. Damn demo on Souky gave me a taste for it!

Pyongyang, make sure to get Assault Suit Leynos 2. It's a mech shooter, so not your normal flying shmup, but it's brilliant.

Hard as nails but one of my favourite games on the system. There's something really lovely about it. Not that expensive either.

Get yourself a japanese PSN account because it's a treasure trove of shoot'em up goodness.

Way ahead of you with a hard-drive full of DoDonPachi, G-Darius, Einhander, R-Type etc...

I just find it weird out of them and all the other fine shooters on JPSN, they pick Cho Aniki. Not the best way to ease people into the genre. Well, certain people maybe.

Is it just giving some monies to the developers? Or is there an actual use for downloading games that can be easily emulated from things like the PSN? I never really understood it myself.

TBH if I can support deserving developers, I will. PS1 games are the equivalent of a fiver on Japanese PSN, so it's not really breaking the bank and hey I like to support these things.

Also, as a Mac user my emulation capabilities are limited - I'll emulate what I can't get my hands on officially, but it's a pain in the arse. I got my joystick working on MAME after a good few hours work and was delighted. One software update later and back to square one :(

I'm always up for supporting developers and shmup developers aren't exactly Activision when it comes to evil and money.

I completely understand the support aspect. Things like Child of Eden need to be bought in their droves.

However with older games I dunno... the collector in me sees that as another fiver that could have gone towards the original release :D

Ah, if only physical copies were nice and affordable :(

There's a collector in me, but I can't always justify 100 euro to play a game when I can play it for a fiver or tenner!
