hi gain antenna for Linksys running dd wrt

I got a 9-12db gain antenna for my Linksys router. I'm running dd wrt. I've connected it selected either left or right antenna for transmitter/receive but it seems to have made it worse from the standard 2db antenna. Is there something else I need to do with settings?
