BMW 316 1.6 litre

Hi, I have my eye on a '00 BMW 316[1.6 litre] saloon.
Anyone here know the average fuel consumption for this model?
Being googlin there for a while and it's like wading thru' snow!!!!

Afaik the 2000 316i (E46) has a 1.9 litre engine not 1.6 litre.

I think that's a mistake - I too was under the impression that the 316i had a 1.9l engine. You could get fuel consumption figures from a site like www.parkers.co.uk, although actual consumption varies from car to car & owner to owner.

According to Wikipedia the 316 had a 1.6 until 2001, but it doesn't say where it was available and could be complete bollocks. German page says it was a 1895cc from '98-'01, which corresponds to the UK websites.

The E36 (1991 - 1998 3 Series) 316i had a 1.6 litre, the E46 (1998 to late 2001) 316i had a 1.9 litre engine which was replaced in late 2001 with a 1.8 litre engine. The E90 (2005 onwards) 316i has a 1.6 litre engine but come July this car is no more.

BTW that carzone description is incorrect in that 316i has a 1.9 litre engine but drive it and you'll be forgiven for thinking it is a 1.6 litre.

yup, that's a mistake. the 316 of that generation sold here is a 1.9.

they call it the 316i because it has the performance of a 1.6 engine

Wikipedia says that they used the M43B16 1.6 engine from the old 3 series from 1998-2001, I'm 99% certain that any E46 316i models sold in Ireland or the UK were 1.9 - maybe they did a 1.6 in other markets.

So if the 316 was 1.9L and the 318 was also 1.9L what's the difference?

Tuning. The current BMW 325d, 330d and 335d, for example, all have 3.0 engines.

to make things more complicated, the 1.9 316 and 318 were replaced by 1.8 and 2.0 engines.

There's a few 99 & 00 318's on carzone that I like, so would it be better to go for the 318 over the 316, they'd be the same/similiar fuel consumption, yes/no?

The 316i and 318i are not great especially the pre 2001 engined ones. If you really want a nice BMW you should be looking at the 320i/320d at least imo.

I hate this kinda of "snobbery" on this board. The OP asked for advice on the BMW 316. He did not ask for advice on what is the best BMW to get. Why stop at the 320? Why not tell him to get a 7-series? It's obvious - the more money the better the car. I'm sure the OP is perfectly aware of this obvious logic.

The OP originally asked about a 316i and then asked about the performance of the 318i. Both are underpowered for what your buying and the OP should not be blinded just because it says BMW on the badge.

Also recommending a 320d/320i is hardly the same as recommending a 7 Series so limit the exagerations please and take a chill pill.

320i models don't generally go for much more than a 316i or 318i. in fact larger engined BMW's tend to be relatively cheap in this country. if the OP is taxing a 1.9 engine, he may as well go the whole hog and tax a 320i

If the OP thought the 316i was a 1.6, then he obviously isn't up to speed on the engine lineup of the E46. (no offence, OP)

316 engine is 8-valve and severly lacking in power for a 1.9, the other one is 16-valve and is a bit better but not by much.

318i was 8 valve too until facelift IIRC. only difference between the 1.9's was tuning.

Had no idea of the engines on the e46, 'til folk here replied & from wiki.
Wiki does say they used the 1.6 [this is where i got lost], anywho, I rang yer man on the 316 I was lookin' at and he's adamant it's a 1.6, saying some sh!te about re-mapping.
All I know is I've gone off it now.

Surely it will say on the tax disc and or VRC what the engine size really is?
