Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Ethernet cable wiring

    Hi,

    I need to run some ethernet cable from our UPC router in living room to an upstairs room that will be used for as an office.
    I am looking for some advice/input on which type of cabling to use i.e:
    - Cat5e/6/6a ?
    - utp/s-ftp/u-ftp ?

    The distance needed is approx 50 mtrs.

    The speed of our broadband is 120 MB/s

    5e is plenty for GigE, you can jump to 6a if you feel like future proofing. 5e is UTP, 6A is bigger and stiffer and comes in variants but UTP is fine for residential.

    Great - thanks for the advice.

    Can you recommend and Irish website to buy from.
    I have looked at Cable monkey, Elara and Screwfix Ireland.

    Some up the brands such as Philex don't have very favourable reviews.

    Cable monkey seems good so far, what do you think ?

    If you are in Dublin you could just go to Woodcom (Wood Communications) long mile road, or Dwyers electrical in forge hill in Cork

    Unfortunately I'm in galway - there is Maplin but Cat5e runs about €120 for 100 mtrs in there

    No not maplin - try an electrical wholesaler - Kellehers electrical or Flahertys

    +1 for freetv.ie (formarly tvtrade.ie)
    I've purchased from them before... cheap shipping (think it was 5euro)

    If you're getting bare cable, you'll also need some rj45 crimps and a crimp tool.
    It's easy enough to crimp on the connectors once you've practiced one or two...

    You may also want to wire into a wall plate/socket outlet instead of leaving a bare cable/crimp coming out of the wall... in this case get this too and mount a socketbox onto the wall:

    nb: you'll want a deep socketbox to mount the faceplates onto, give yourself plenty of room for cables.

    oh... if you don't fancy all the wiring and what goes with it, you could always use one of these:

    You will be limited to the 100mbps though, but tbh, for your internet connection this will be ideal... and it looks like it comes with 3 port switch built in so you can plug 3 computers straight into it...
