Ooh the million dollar question! Will you be working? If yes, ask your employer. If not I'd get on to the tourist board & ask if they've any recommendations. If I hear of anything I'll let you know, but it's such a small village you'd prob be as well off striking a deal with someone renting holiday apartments outside the village...

We don't have a plan to work but if something came up we could be tempted. I sent a mail to the tourist office earlier today so let's see what they come back with. Otherwise I'd appreciate if you could let me know if you hear of anything.
    Cheers

Well the tourist office came back pretty quickly. with the following

thank you for your kind email.
Please ask the land agents for long term apartments.
The contact details you’ll find http://www.wilderkaiser.info/de/service/kontakt-info/infrastruktur-a-z.html#page-1

I'm not really sure what I'm looking for in that.
Fanny any chance you might be able to help me find some "Local Agents"
    Thanks

To be honest, even locals struggle to get accommodation in that time period- the village is so small that accommodation is like gold-dust during high season. There are no rental agents in the village as such, the Tourist Board would be your closest bet.

Maybe write a generic email & copy it to all the Soll land agents on the list they sent you?

Sorry I can't be more help! But at least you're looking into it early- you might be able to strike a deal with one of the apartment owners. Maybe try starting with Bergview Haus or Dorf 22? Good luck!! :-)

We're a group of 10 lads looking for ideally an apartment for 4 nights at the end of January. No problems paying big cash (its a 40'ieth).

I know that it will mostly be week to week rentals, but do you think there would be any options for a 4 day option?

  • Registered Users Posts: 175 ✭✭istaunton

Hey Fanny thanks for all the help eventually got sorted and have an apartment for Jan, Feb and March.
Its pretty small but sure we will survive. Looking for a bit more help now :)
    Ski Hire or Buy
Neither of us have a clue about ski's. I'd be happy to find some sort of rental agreement for the winter and maybe at the end look at buying. Do you know if this is something the guys and Snow and Fun would do?
Or if you have a better suggestion I'm all ears.

    Thanks

You are better off buying from the get go.

    And there lies the problem.
I havent got a clue what to buy :(

Well renting doesn't make any sense if you are around longer than say 3 weeks.

Proper fitting boots is the big thing. You could strike it lucky with 2nd hand boots . IMO you are better off buying new and getting them heat moulded in the shop, resort shops will be a bit pricier, i dunno is heading to say snow and rock before you go that much of a cheaper option.

As for skis, for beginner/novices skis aren't that complicated. The skiers here can advise you what to look out for. If the 2nd hand trade is good there thats the best way to go. It possible you will grow out of the skis as you improve but by the time you get to that stage you will have learn't enough to know what to look for.

There is a sticky thread here about buying gear thats a good guide.

Get your own helmet though don't go second hand.

Cheers for the advice. The good part is already have my own boots and helmet. Will try do a good bit more research before the new year and figure what I want / need

    Thanks

Fundamentally it depends on the type of skiing you want to do, different skis do different things. There are skis for off piste, skis for piste and "all mountain" skis which are nominally for doing anything on a given day (but consequentially don't do any one thing as good as the specialist skis). Having skied a lot over the years on different skis i can assure you this isn't marketing, its physics. Piste skis are much easier to turn on pistes and are much better on ice. Off piste skis are much heavier and harder to turn on piste but are great when conditions are choppy with big piles of fresh snow. Off piste skiing is significantly harder in skinny piste skis because the skis don't float in the snow, they sink to the bottom because they don't have as much surface area as the bigger skis.

I suspect you'll be mostly on piste in which case you'll want a piste ski (:)).

I'd say get a recommendation of a shop you can trust and then find out if they do a try before you buy offer. Most rental places will sell you skis if you tell them in advance you want to buy. Try a few pairs, listen to their advice and go with what suits you best. Sometimes ski manufacturers will have test days at resorts where you can try a bunch of skis.

Yes- go in & ask for Martin, tell him your story & he'll look after you no prob. I would defo say rent your skis, at least then you have brand new skis every season, and don't have to worry about the transport, storage and maintenance. He'll give you a good rate on rental for the season. Their rental gear is renewed every year & great quality so if you're in early you'll prob get a brand new pair to rent anyway :-)

Delighted you got an apartment sorted- great work!!! :-)

Email the tourist office & they'll send you a list of what's available- should be plenty of choice if you get on it now! (And if cash is no problem, the week only rental shouldn't be a problem!) you could also stay in one of the Hotels, I'd recommend the Postwirt for a 40th- great food, great staff, great music :-)

Out of curiousity fanny, how much could they rent out skis for a season. I would have thought it would be prohibitively expensive and better off getting your own.

No that's Graham, Martin is the owner. Best thing is to tell them what you want & they'll give you your options. You might get a good secondhand pair from last season, or you might decide to rent a brand new pair for the season. Either way they'll sort you out & are always very reasonable :-)
