Felix Baumgartner will at lunchtime today attempt to become the first man to break the sound barrier unaided by a vehicle by skydiving from an altitude of 23 miles up : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-19860249

He should reach a speed of over 690 mph after 40 seconds in the near-vacuum of the stratosphere. This will be some achievement if he succeeds - it is of particular interest to NASA and other designers in terms of the feasibility of new systems for escaping from future high-altitude aircraft.

Nice touch that the current holder of the highest altitude skydive, Joe Kittinger, who is now in his 80's, is part of the team and will be the only one in radio contact with Baumgartner during his descent.

There will be a live stream, with a 20 second delay in case of any 'incident' :http://www.redbullstratos.com/the-mission/how-to-watch-live!/
