I am looking into buying a laptop for my parents and have a budget of €500. It's going to be used for browsing and email primarily. My only solid requirement is that the screen needs to be around 15" (they have a netbook and they hate it, and the last laptop has a 17" screen which made it a bit unwieldly to transport around).

I've done a bit of research and I've narrowed down to what I think are decent enough laptops for their price. If anyone thinks any of the laptops below are better than the rest, or have an alternative laptop within the €500 budget, I'm all ears.

Samsung Series 3 (i3 2330M, 4GB RAM)
Acer Aspire 5749 (i3 2350M, 4GB RAM)
Lenovo G580 (i3 2370M, 4GB RAM)
Dell Inspiron 15 (i3 2350M, 3GB RAM)
Asus K53Z (A4 3305M, 4GB RAM)
Wildcard: Acer Aspire 5750 Refurb (i5 2430M, 4GB RAM, 3 month warranty)

Scratch the ASUS (AMD A-4) and the Dell (3 GB RAM) and the Samsung (too expensive).

Leaves you with the Lenovo, the Acer 5749 (which you can get here for €417) and the refurb Acer Core i5 (limited warranty and the battery probably isn't new, if that's an issue).

Tesco are doing two laptops for €299 at the moment. Both 4GB RAM with 320GB Hard drive. Both are 15" screens. One is a Toshiba and the other I think is an Asus but I'm probably wrong on that one. I'm tempted to pick one up myself at that price.

pc world actually have a decent range of 15.6 inch laptops under €500 with the advantage that you try them out in the shop.
