Where to have plastic pick-guard cut out, Galway?

Hi there,

I need to replace the pick-guard of an electric guitar and cannot do it myself (no tools, space or time to do it) but don't want to expend a fortune either.
It's not a standard shape so I cannot buy it already made.
Any ideas where can I go?

Thanks.

Pop into the lad in the Old Malte (laneway beside the Kings Head). He does more trad instruments but he will know somebody if he can't do it himself. Name is Kieran.

I would highly recommend not going near that guy. He let both me and my sister down in separate transactions. When I deal with him his rudeness was shocking. You can do some more reading here.

Instead I would call into Paul Doyle and see what he can do for you. Here is a Google Maps link to where he is based. He is a pleasure to deal with.

I'd recommend Paul Doyle too. He's in the laneway beside Rouge on Dominic Street.

I would recommend Kieran Moloney he has worked on my instruments in the past, pleasant, straight talking and reasonably priced quality craftsman.

But a pick guard? I would have thought all your gonna need tool wise is a philips head screwdriver and the internet to source a replacement, what make/model is it? pics?

It's a French Lag Strat like guitar and the pick-guard it came with it's very thin and dull and I wanted to have it replaced but the actual space between the pickups is smaller than the standard Strat you can find anywhere. So I need to cut it out of a blank sheet of 3-ply plastic which I already have.

Ok sounds like you'll need a fret saw for that, you say "french lag like" what is the actual make/model?

The model is Lag Jet 100, similar to this one but much more cheaper:

Nice I like the headstock,

I'd say a fret saw or similar and some sanding could handle that, have you considered the clearance of poles, pots and switch if your going for a thicker ply of guard? it may create a clearance issue it may not. Either way Kieran or Paul will do this for you, are you going for the factory look or customising it?

Another option is an engineering company that has a machine that can cut from patterns. If you have a template, then they can cut a copy for you in the material you want. Probably not the cheapest option, but worth contacting someone like Feeney Keating and get a quote anyway. They should be able to bevel the edge also. Cutting by hand is a pain in the a*se and you never get the consistency a machine can. You can just drill out the screw holes yourself and use a countersink bit.

Thanks guys. I asked a company that uses water jet but it's over 50€, too expensive. I will see if I can make it town to ask this luthier next weekend.
And I don't want to do this myself as I am sure I am not going to do a neat job

Yes, if you go to their website they ask you to contact the local dealer who is Waltons of Dublin, but they said they don't sell any Lag spare parts.
