a nice bit of builders promo. Spoiler: But why are US ships so small and puny looking compared to European ships of the same design/class?

Spot on. But you will never see anything like either of these coming out of US yards.

To be fair Bollinger in the promotional video do build tugs/psv's of near these lengths but not bulk, be way too deep to get down the bayau.
You are probably aware but many over here are surprised that design and build quality in the US is crap, real dark ages stuff, they are still building vessels with 4&6 man cabins and communal toilets and showers etc. Believe its because over there working at sea is still largely viewed on as a job for ex-convicts and drop outs.

Their yard work practices leave a lot to be desired too. True dark ages stuff. Treat the workers like crap. No goin home till the job is done type of carry on. Still hand welding major structures too.

Speaking of waves, Safehaven Marine have been building Workboats, catmarans and Pilot boats for a number of years in Cork. The company owner, Frank, tests the boats himself in the worst conditions the mouth of cork harbour can throw at him.

Heres what he done on Wednesday, while the rest of us were waiting for a storm as bad as Hurricaine Charlie.

Visit their youtube page for more similar videos.

Great place to test them, father was a pilot in Cork Harbour back in the sixties, and had a few trips to Milford Haven as the weather was so bad when they got out that he could not get off the Tanker
