What was Bill doing during the fight? It certainly wasn't watching it. But yeah, he is Joe everyman, so he can talk off the top of his head and proclaim its some sort of colloquial style that he is a master of.
In fairness, he was actually referring to the way the Indian boxer was following through his missed punches with his forearm and elbow, which Bernard Dunne had just pointed out.

I made the same mistake as you while watching but someone put me right.

Jimmy Magee yesterday at the start of the Katie Taylor fight:

'This young girl from Bray......this young lady from Bray....this young woman from Bray....that should cover it'.

!!

Ah Jimmy. Gas, it's like those commentator guys on the Simpsons

If that was the case, I stand corrected.

Nail on the head for me, the BBC commentators & guests all seem to be so fresh, with new faces appearing as the games have progressed! I agree that Bill, Jimmy Magee and possibly even George Hamilton are well past their best, but presumably there are no other otions for RTE?

Thought rte was good tonight. No interruptions helped. Wonder what audience figures are. Would love to see more athletics on TV. Athletics needs to promote itself - maybe ban pacemakers so we see races.

Let's not forget Eurosport. Their coverage is excellent in that they don't usually cut away from the action, they just show the feed and lots of it. The problem with Eurosport is the presenters and the commentators, they are dreadful also. Gillingham and Hutchings at least are athletics people, but they make so many mistakes and their manner of speaking is so irritating, particularly Hutchings.

He always sounds like he's swallowing something every time he speaks, like swirling tea in his mouth. He gets way too randomly excited when it's apparent he was supposed to be paying attention and suddenly noticed something. Then he uses the same phrases every 2nd sentence like 'My WORD!' and he finishes every sentence by adding something like "... does the Jamaican" as a waffle filler. Very annoying.

Also, the pieces with Sebastian and Maurice Greene, just cringe-worthy.

Ideal world would be Europsort coverage with BBC commentators, or the red button I suppose, I just don't have that on UPC.

RTE athletic's analysts really talking crap. Matthews says there are 100's of 400m runners in US running 45 sec. My latest count about 50. "You know, you know, you know Bill". "And to be honest Bill" is really boring. Very poor amateurish comments for the past week. Can't wait for them to get off the air and get back to Dunphy and Giles.

I have to say, I was very surprised hearing those accusations being thrown about so freely by the panel today. Jerry Kiernan has been doing it a bit but the others usually stay quiet on the issue.

Dunphy, though, could talk about anything. Put him on the TV and tell him the sport and he'll do as much research as he needs and will be able to hold his own in a conversation and analysis about it. And Giles could keep him company.

The only time I met Mr Dunphy I was 14 and looked probably younger. He opened Roscarberry festival in west Cork. I was talking to him for about 10 mins. Nice guy, then he said "Do you want a pint" It was at that stage that he fell backwards on to a bonet of a parked car. He was a sound drunk. PS : I said no to the pint.

True, and not the only mistake he's ever made but he'll always admit his mistakes and have a laugh about them.

And in fairness, he was there to talk about the football, not the national anthems.

been watching a lot of the olympics on NBC - very frustrating, distances are in feet & inches and they refer to the 1500m as the 'metric mile', the 4x 400 relay as the 'mile relay' etc
