The United states WONT get one medal at these games.. Folks is that a sign of the times or what. It just shows how globalised the sport has become. The USA have achieved more medals then anyone in Boxing at the summer olympics since it was introduced back for the 1904 games.

Small country, small resources. Non-Olympic sports like football and hurling and rugby (soon to change, to a degree) are like religions here. In Cuba boxing is the religion, in Kenya and East Africa in general it's endurance running. Different places excel at different sports. Only the mega nations are all-rounders.
Just thank God we excel at something because there's plenty of countries out there that are hopeless at just about everything. |

There is so many factors which can define winners and losers.
Money, Resources, Population, Climate, Altitude (Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, etc), lots lots more viable reasons why its hard to compete with certain nations at certain sports or the super nations. The Dutch however with a reasonably small population are the model to aspire to given their participation and success in numerous events but they have had to achieve that through frugality and careful investment. For example in Ireland i don't think we even have a proper sized Velodrome if any at all should be pursue track cycling. We only have a three 50m swimming pools. Morton Stadium is the only purpose built Athletics stadium. Also worth noting that GB have 541 athletes competing in all 26 of the sports. We only have 66 in 14 of those sports and 9 percent of those are boxers. Our athletes have no doubt pushed themselves to the limits at these games and for some it wasnt enough to qualify for finals despite achieving personal bests. We can only hope that in the future when this country eventually gets back on its feet and starts making money again, that steadily investment will flow into sport and that every child growing will have the chance to participate in numerous sports other then the GAA, Soccer, and Rugby and that they will get the chance to develop to the highest standards should they show the ambition |
