And another scandal hits the gymnastics governing body. Jordyn Wieber, the defending world champion who has won almost every competition in the last 4 years has not qualified to the all-around finals. She posted a huge score and came 4th, out of the top 24 who advance to the final. But, there is a '2 per country' rule, and she falls foul- made a few errors and two of her teammates overtook her. It has caused a massive outcry, the rule exists to encourage those from non-gymnastics countries, but this is the most blatant injustice yet. She was a favourite for gold, and was hyped all year- this is just unbelievable.

They may not have won but I was delighted for Nathan Adrian getting his first proper Olympic medal (he got a gold one in Beijing but didn't actually swim in the final).
He beat James "The Missile" Magnessun over that first leg too. Brilliant stuff. The BBC commies were talking before hand about Magnessun leading off instead of anchoring, and were convinced he was going to do something really special, blow the field away, set an individual record etc. etc. He had a pretty average leg. Cameron van der Burgh winning the 100m breaststroke was a nice moment too. He was looking and pointing up to the sky after winning. Said afterwards he was thinking of Alexander Dale Oen. (Norwegian butterfly specialist who died of cardiac arrest while at a training camp in April. Would have been a real favourite for gold) |

Lots of silly rules in gymnastics and in a lot of sports. The world #302 in men's tennis is getting to compete in the Olympics because Kohlschrieber pulled out last minute and the rule is that at that late stage whoever the highest ranked player already on site gets the spot. However a "4 per country" rule meant that they had to go all the way down to #302 to find one of the Indian doubles players to fill the spot. Even though there were a couple of guys in the top 50 there too who couldn't take it because of the 4 per country thing. A lot of these rules are brought in to try to make things fairer to lower ranked countries/teams/athletes but they often end up being unfair on the higher ranked ones. |

Always loved the traditional Irish names, like McCarthy, Murphy, Puspure. Yes, and I always loved traditional American names, like Connolly, Sheridan, Flanagan, McGrath, Ryan, McDonnell and Whale. |

Not the first parsimonious screw up by RTE. They punctuated the Opening Ceremony with ad breaks. Fortunately, I knew they had form in this respect and watched BBC, while recording RTE.

More on the O'Leary story this morning. Independent seem determined to throw enough **** at their story to make sure some of it sticks. Shameful journalism, this could have been dealt with ages ago or in the future, but the media's holding it and then releasing it at the start of the games is a more disgraceful story than the story itself.
Hope he sticks it to them and brings home a medal. |

I think you're full of schite, and you're starting to spoil the many threads you post in with your stupid conspiracy theories. Why not stick to that forum?

They are training partners. Rivalry in competition is not "pure hatred". There is probably no greater honour for them, then swimming for their country, and swimming their best at that moment in time.

Good start for Ireland this morning - pb for McMahon in her 200 heat. That's all you can ask for really, but as it's her weaker event, unlikely to be enough for the semis. Well done Sycerika.
