I know that the cost is a huge factor, he'd be spending over €6k a year on petrol for the commute alone. But imo time is a bigger factor especially if you're thinking of having kids, as you pointed out it's 41 days a year commuting, it just seems crazy to me. Fair play to everyone who does that but I doubt they do it by choice.

Maybe you could work from home one or two days a week, if your job doesn't require you to be on site every day?
Or if you do have to turn up every day, maybe you could rent/buy a cheap flat near work, where you could stay two or three nights a week? And that you and your wife could use as a second home? |

if i were you, i would stay where i am. your girlfriend might want to move house but their is a possibility you may not be able to sell your current house in this current climate. so lets say you do change your job to cork airport in the hope you can sell your current house and buy the house your interested in, yet you find you can't sell your current house, you could end up doing a commute from your current house to cork.

104km from ORK to "the SouthEast" - Google replies "Kilmacthomas".
Been a few years since I was a regular on the N25 between Cork and Waterford and the Youghal bypass did make a difference but I'm not sure I'd want to be doing that twice daily 250ish days a year - it's not like belting down the M8 from Cashel or somewhere. As someone with a 9mth kid I echo the poster above who mentioned the additional stress and timesuckage that will cause. OP: how bad is your current commute? |

Hi folks,
Lots of really good advice, questions and experience shared there, so thanks a million. Let me answer some questions and fill in some gaps... "the real question is why is she so desperate for you to move to somewhere that is so far away from your job? " She always wanted to to move back and i understand why and have no issue with that. If it was a choice between here, now or there, then there wins hands down. "if i were in the op's shoes i would be looking to find somewhere to live nearer their workplace. " The way we are at the moment, we are close to my folks, my job and my friends. We live in my house, in an estate. Now I'm not tied to here in a home-bird sense, its just the way things have fallen. If the proposed commute wasn't part of the move, then i'd be down there in a heart beat. "Apart from the commuting aspect, will your career prospects be harmed by moving to a smaller airport? Will the promotion opportunities exist there for someone who may move to the bottom of the list?" I should have been clearer, it's the the Cork Airport business park, and yes it would be a worry in the current economic circumstances relocating to a smaller office - I guess I'd be able to make my mark after a year or so. But yes it'd be a worry. " Maybe you could work from home one or two days a week, if your job doesn't require you to be on site every day?" Tried that one already - no go. HR ruled it out saying there was no chance of it, as everybody would want to do it then. The job is hands on with lots of communication across the world, so being on site makes sense I guess. " Or if you do have to turn up every day, maybe you could rent/buy a cheap flat near work, where you could stay two or three nights a week? And that you and your wife could use as a second home? " With the house here (rented out if we go, hopefully!) and the new house in Waterford, we couldn't afford another place to be honest. " 104km from ORK to "the SouthEast" - Google replies "Kilmacthomas". OP: how bad is your current commute? " You're not far off with Kilmac! Current commute is 17 minutes - as I said, life is good! Would an 8 - 4:30 shift make it easier? Sound... Last edited by HandsomeRover; 24-05-2012 at 23:34. |

I know a few guys living in waterford doing 7-3 in cork, they car pool to save costs. The main topic of conversation is falling asleep behind the wheel, how many red bulls it takes to get home. I lasted 1 year doing a 40km commute before i had a fright, falling asleep at the wheel. I spent the next week on the train and moved jobs within the month. Also i would never chance even one drink the night before work as thay seemed to add to the tirdness.

I'm in the same (kind of) situation as OP.
I'm awaiting a call back from a job. If I get the job, it will mean commuting (for 7 months (contract)) from Limerick city to Cork city, Mon-Fri. There is no option of flexi-time & no option of working remotely a couple of days a week. There is no public transport that will get me to Cork in time. Added to that, I drive a REALLY crappy Fiat Punto 1.2 petrol van. Add again the fact that my wife is 8 months pregnant.....! If I get the job but don't take it, it's back to the dole queue on Tuesday morning. So, OP, how much is too much? It really depends on your own personal circumstances. For me, it's commute or the dole. Considering I have a child on the way, I feel I don't have much choice but to take the job (if offered!!) & commute. |

Why not rent a flat in Cork during the week? This would save you around 20 hours commuting each week, 1000+ km in an unreliable vehicle/week, petrol costs and you'll feel much better at weekends.
