Everyone will have a different opinion, most use a .223 but the .204 is getting more and more popular these days but not sure you'd find many second hand.

An advantage the .223 has over the .204 is cheaper ammo such as american eagle that will be good for plinking or will also be good on foxes.

The .204 doesn't have cheap ammo but the hornady v-max etc ammo for both are in the same price range.

There's also the hornet, swift and 22-250 but ammo for these are fairly expensive these days.

you would probably find a decent .223 package second hand for your budget.

All of them will kill foxes just as well as each other.

As an idea - http://patrickcarleyfirearms.com/pat...fles-for-sale/

He has - New CZ527 SYN
WITH CZ MOUNTS AND A 4-16X44 HAWKE VARMINT SF SCOPE for €925

Hornet are less than half that..................22 Mags about the same.
(at what ranges are you expecting to engage?)

So no need to go mad

I agree, i don't understand why people say they are expensive, they are one of the cheapest cf rifles to feed in ireland,

Best of luck with it, you won't be disappointed
