Hi all,

Im a qualified primary school teacher. This is my second year out of college and as of yet I don't have my DIP year done. Like many others im finding it really difficult to get a job at the minute. I just saw an ad for teaching in Abu Dhabi and I was wondering if anyone here has tried it and what their experience was like?

Hey,
I was teaching in Dubai so about an hour away from abu dhabi on the motorway. I was in a very wealthy private school. The children had nannys, drivers, chefs etc and behaviour and respect was a HUGE problem!! In saying that nobody really cares about work over there. Its very much work to live rather than live to work. teachanywhere.com have a lot of middle east vacancies and they are very helpful sorting out interviews etc. I would advise Dubai over Abu Dhabi though as there is more to do and personally I wouldnt go near any of the other emirates. If you have any other questions anyway just ask!

Female friends have taught there. Some male pupils had no respect for them and the principal made them pass some boys in tests because of who they were.

Wondering about teaching in the Middle East myself too - career break next year. I was told that for jobs, you'd be better off just looking up the individual schools than the agencies.

As regards Abu Dhabi, spent yesterday researching where to go in the Middle East and what I found is that there is a pretty resounding opinion on different forums that Abu Dhabi can be pretty boring. Same goes for Qatar, Oman and pretty much anywhere out there apart from Dubai! Not sure if that's actually the case, just the impression I got from reading up on it. Few friends in Dubai myself too and they seem to be having a ball, although I think the money in Abu Dhabi might a bit better.

I agree with everything here - Dubai it seems is the place to go!

I've just been subbing for the last year, it's getting tiring watching some friends are getting their dip done and me failing to get anything but thats the situation at the mo!

I'm heading to Dubai in August anyway, want a change from things for a year. . !! Everyone I know there says it's amazing, I don't know anyone in Abu Dhabi that well but Dubai does seem to be the place to go, if you want the social life too!! Abu Dhabi does seem to offer more money however. . ! Wherever you think, go for it!!

My friend teaches in Dubai at the minute. He loves it there. Teaches wealthy kids same as above.

I'm going over to visit in June. Very excited !

I've been on to people in Abu Dhabi and they say that its a great spot. I think everywhere will pale in comparison to the nitelife etc. in Dubai so when you see on forums et.that Abu Dhabi and other places are boring probably doesn't necessarily mean that they're boring in themselves, just boring alongside Dubai!

The great thing as well is that Abu Dhabi is only an hour on a bus from Dubai so if you wanted, you could head up to Dubai every weekend - transport seems cheap. Even the other Emirates - Sharjah for example is a dry zone but that seems to be only 20 minutes from Dubai. A lotta people even commute between the two. Fujairah over on the east coast is only as far as Abu Dhabi is from Dubai. So at the end of the day, I'm not restricting myself to Dubai. Even places like Doha and Musqat - they might be quietish from what I've heard but at the same time, how bad can they be! They're the capital cities of two of the fastest-growing countries in the world! I could be wrong, but I'm considering Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Sharjah, Doha and Musqat. Might be a safer option even from the POV of getting a job this late - most of the positions have been filled since March.

I'll be going to both any way, I have friends in both. Dubai is where I'm going any way in August , I'm very excited!! Well ,where I'm going is not proper central Dubai, it's technically on the Sharjah border but if you walk five minutes it's the state of Dubai you're in the city - it still looks like you're in the city there from what I seen on Google maps and being told from friends there .Alot of schools are in this 'Sharjah border' area, It's only a short drive in to Dubai for the nightlife anyway. It all depends where in Sharjah you get - check the school first, some are right next to Dubai but are known address wise as Sharjah, and some are way out!! Just saying this because when jobs come up as Sharjah, some are so close to Dubai you wouldn't think it, and yet people don't apply because it says Sharjah!! Check out the schools location and see from there!

Well depends really. I have friends that were newly Qualified primary teachers from Mary I who got jobs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi at the end of July, leaving for UAE only 3 weeks later!! There were 6 of them that left. . so the jobs are still out there, you just need to find them!! Especially as they say Dubai is so competitive and 4 of them got jobs there that late!

Good to hear! Yeah I've been told that there will always be a few late jobs out there, with people leaving at the last minute etc. So here's hoping!

Was offered a job in Abu Dhabi only to then be told that they can't allow it cos my qualification would not be accepted out there. My parchment says that it is a Higher Diploma in Arts - you have to go to the supplementary pages to see that it is a Higher Diploma in Arts in Primary Education. But unfortunately it seems that if the word 'Education' is not written on the parchment, then yer a no-go and that they are pretty stubborn about the rule too!

Its a teaching qualification, nothing else and obviously so even when you look at the titles of all the exams etc on the supplementary pages - all are teaching-related. But still they don't seem to want to recognise it.

Have been told that some schools might take on teachers without registering them with ADEC so maybe it might be possible to get some sort of work in Abu Dhabi but if you're in the same boat as me, then might be an idea to look further afield...

I have an interview with Skyline University in Sharjah. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this institution and any idea on the salary I should ask for?
I believe it's an assistant or associate position that I'm applying for.

I was just looking for some advice on who to get in touch with about applying for jobs in Abu Dhabi? Does anyone have any personal experience with certain companies because I am trying to relocate there as my job in the school im in now is finishing up in a few weeks and I think now would be a great time for me to go!
