Only thing in regular basis to keep your aircon working, is just to use it.
At least once a week turn it on for few minutes.

But if you say it's not cooling great, you might need to fill it in with a new gas, and also check if system is tight and not leaking.

Don't go to halfords, its expensive and the job is not done correctly. Halfords charge 70 euro for a 510g of r134a(The gas that used in aircon) and another 14 to do the job.

Firstly, if you car is empty of gas, 510g ain't enough to fill. IFRC vectra's hold about 730g of gas.

Secondly, they can't pressure test the system, so you could be pissing away the 70 you spent on gas.

In short go to a dealer or indy with the equipment, to give you an idea, where i work charges €75 for a AC service and refill. There's lots of garages doing similar offers.

Aircon needs a specialist, so it's very unlikely your mechanic will be able to do it - at best he will just get someone in to do the job for him and charge you whatever he is charged (or maybe more). Your nearly as well off getting it looked at now when we have this weather so that you benefit from it. Depending on where you are based, I can recommend 1 or 2 guys.

amen to that, my accord ex has a fubared a/c compressor.

an unused a/c is a no no.

and now i have the grand total of one quote for a replacement on parts gateway..

You're not having much luck with the Accord.
