I need to take images of jewellery for a new website I am trying to build , has anyone suggestions for a cheap light box set up ,or has anyone got plans for a home made one? and whether to use led or metal halide lighting?

there's loads of examples of small macro lighting setups ....including pics which if my memory is correct Borderfox posted last year.

I hope you understand how to use studio lights/lighting properly and how to use your camera properly and also how to post process properly because if you dont it could be cheaper to pay someone who does know how to do it.

I dont mean to nit-pick here but you say you "need" to take images ...do you need to or can you ask the person who you are making the website for to supply the images (which is the norm I understand) ...or did you tell the client that you could provide the photography and website work ?

well the website will be my own jewellery and I dont have the cash to pay for pro services I do however have time to play around with stuff to try and obtain the desired outcome , the images do not have to be of superior quality, good quality will be fine, so will check out borderfox ...thanks

some people with knowledge of photography are willing to work in exchange for goods/services.

So you could get professionally done images in exchange for some product or website work (assuming you know what you are doing there)

The barter system is working for some people ...of course as long as both people are happy to use the barter system and no-one is being taken advantage of ... then you could be happy out.

This is important. Jewelry is easily the most difficult product type I have ever had to deal with for website product shots, especially with gold, silver and light or diamond gemstones. And I was just doing the post processing of professional shots.

I can understand gold and diamonds being tricky as there is a lot at stake and perception of high quality is of the upmost importance with these products but mine will not have this level of expectation, thats not to say I dont want it looking its best!
