Hi guys

I wan't to go to college but have been told the course I wish to do would cost me €17,500 for 3 years (I am charged full fees).

I have heard there is a possibility that studying in a college abroad may be cheaper.

Would anyone know where I can find a list of foreign colleges that teach in English that offer no fees or very low fees?

Thanks in advance for the help. I really wan't to go to college but it seems everything is against me. I havnt found anything better than a part time minimum wage job here and because my parents technically make a large income (but are broke due to debt) my application for job seekers/back to education and other grants/assistance has been going badly.

Hi there,

I would recommend Scotland, as there are no fees for an undergraduate degree if you are an EU citizen and if you havent completed a degree before. I am currently studying in Edinburgh and loving it.

If you want more info the SAAS is where you apply to have your fees paid.

You would have to apply through UCAS to go to university here, and as far as I know they process applications earlier than Irish colleges, for example I got my acceptance letter in March of last year, but had to wait a few more months to hear back from the Irish University I had applied to.

If you are looking to start uni this September I would get started on researching places straight away as the whole process takes time, but its worth it.

ok, so I just re-read your OP again and I think I misunderstood. I was assuming that you hadn't done a degree before, but from you saying that you are not eligible for free fees, maybe you have?? In that case I dont think you would be eligible for free fees in Scotland either, sorry...

Possibly if you never finished the degree you may still be eligible, I'm not sure.

Other options could be Holland, I have heard that the fees there are about 1500 - 2000 euro a year, and they usually have courses in English. It would probably depend on what you are studying.

I was 2 years into a degree but had to leave due to financial issues. The course is no longer offered. I have not completed a degree.

What are you interested in studying?

Netherlands and Belgium offer courses through English for very low fees but they tend to be specialised in areas.

Scotland is still a possibility, email SAAS and explain your situation.
At worst,, you might be able to get credit for modules studied and cut down the degree. A friend of mine did this and got to start the degree at second year for example which saved him a fair bit of money.

You might be eligible to have your fees paid as a 'second chance student' if the degree you didn't complete was more than five years ago. What kind of courses are you interested in?

Nymeria is correct in saying you can study in Scotland. As you haven't completed a degree, you will still be entitled to free fees there, regardless of any years of an incomplete degree. Check the SAAS site above. Denmark offer free fees too and if you are looking for science or engineering degrees, there are other supports available.

Yeah you should be fine if you have not completed a degree....a friend of mine here was in the same situation as you, and they asked her for a letter from the University she previously attended just to confirm that she had not completed a degree with them.

I have heard rumours that they are trying to bring in fees here but I reckon if they do it will be a few years yet (hoping!!). There are loads of Irish people here, and where I am (Edinburgh) has loads of students, its great. Plus, flights home are cheap.

If you are considering Scotland, I would really get going with regards to applying to SAAS (the funding authority).

Got an email from them a week or two ago reminding me to apply sooner rather than later for the coming year, as they backlogged pretty quickly. Last year I had to wait until about October before they confirmed my funding, thankfully the Universities are aware of the delay and usually give you a few months grace to get your funding letter. Anyway, I think the cut off date is the end of June.
