Interestingly, managing blood sugar in recovering alcoholics can actually aid the recovery.

Total anecdotal observation but many ex-alcoholics have a very high consumption of sweets, know one in particular that used to go through a tin of roses a week.

Most drugs that increase dopamine in any significant way cause weight loss, at least initially. The reward centres of the brain are the lynch pin of obesity. This is a very cutting edge theory but is rapidly gaining consensus in the bariatric research community.

I also find it interesting that people who give up smoking often experience rapid weight gain.

ya i put on two stone since giving up smoking cigarettes tobacco definately occupies you and its hard when you dont have that smoke in your hand..

Ive recently tried diet pills and supplements such as CLA booster (very expensive 26 euros to buy in the health food shops),now im on a cheaper and more effective alternative..cider vinegar and iodine,it kickstarts your metabolism and makes you lose lots of weight..a small measure of cider vinegar(straight),and two iodine pills three times a day works wonders..im on a hot and sour soup diet too they weight is coming off but getting it to stay off its whats tricky..

Nicotine also increases lipoprotein lipase which works to inhibit weight gain, the large drop of which piles on the weight when nicotine is taken away.

Babies who are breastfed gain less weight over their first year of life compared to babies fed either breast milk or formula from a bottle, according to a U.S. study.
The report, in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, is one piece of a growing body of evidence that breastfeeding appears to be the best choice for a newborn and protect against obesity later in life.

It sure would be interesting to find out what is triggering the increased obesity in the formula fed children?

-Too many calories overall
-Missing growth factors or extra growth factors (due to animal origin or non fresh product)
-Antibodies from the mother missing (animals fed with antibiotics tend to be leaner)
-Wrong mix of nutrients i.e. ratio of fat/protein/starch/simple sugars not matched (would be surprised if they don't this with formula)
-Bottle feeding (wonder was this controlled for re breast milk vs formula) and providing too many calories at each feeding

Looks like the one in bold is the leading candidate at the moment as to why this is happening.
