Fish on Friday

No meat on Fridays used to be the rule, and maybe it still is for some.
I wonder if this is a purely Christian/Roman Catholic tradition or does it have its roots in something much earlier?

I think it's even worse if you eat meat on good friday, haven't a clue why that is, especially when christianity promotes cannibalism
