Hi folks, I'm looking into the above course in the NCMI (part of CIT) at the moment and would love to get a student's perspective on it before making any decisions.

I did the Marine Engineering course in the CIT before they moved to the NMCI. You'll be training as a deck officcer where I trained as an engineering officer. PM me if you have any particular questions and I'll try to answer them. I qualified in 1996 so i can't give you up to date info, What I can do is email your questions to friends of mine who are mates & masters (commonly known as Chief Officers and Captains) and who are either back sitting exams or have just finished them. The course hasn't really changed except the NMCI has a simulator whereas we had a ship to train on in college.

If your on Facebook search for the Merchant Navy - there's a few good sites there. Try searching youtube as well

Hey guys, found this thread after searching.

Just wondering about the 15 months sea time in second year of this course. How much time off do you get during that time? I realise it varies from company to company but a few examples would be great.

Also, do you get paid and if so, how much? Again ballpark would be great.

As you've said this varies from company to company and on the type of ship but here are a few examples:

4-6weeks on/4-6 weeks off
4 months on/2 months off
3 months on/2 months off

Coming out of the NMCI you will most likely be working at sea for months at a time as it is mostly deep sea companies that recruit out of there. e.g. BP/Shell/Maersk

Seatime in your second year of college is actually quite different from when you actually qualify. most companies will give you a week off for every monrht you do..... when your cadet only. Then when you qualify, the other timescales gove above apply. Great course, Would highly recommend it! I started in 2003 and have been back since to do my Chief Mate/Masters.

As for pay depends on the company you get for your cadetship...... you could get anywhere between 200 to 2000 a month. however, once you qualify the possabilities are endless. How does 600e a day sound?

Folks, for anyne looking for information on life at sea a Maritime forum has been set up recently. Some of the people posting there are actively working at sea.

Its new so it will take a while but there will be info posted about ships & living ob board
