currently building a website for a friend. and i want to include a news section that can be easily updated by the user without dreamweaver, but not looking for a complicated blog,

Depends on how simple you want to go. Very first website I did, I used a simple text file as the content, which the user could update, then a batch file to ftp it to a certain place on the server which was then read by php

Not exactly

• secure (password stored in plaintext in the batch file),
• maintainable (better not change the structure of the page, it will totally mess it up), or
• customisable (plain text only please)

but it still managed to fulfil the requirements
