someone would want to be doing something fairly bad now for me to stop them in my own car. havent ever done it and no intention of starting.

having said that if the other car stopped for him and he identified himself as indicated in the first post then, theres no legal issue.

once identified the guard has the full authority to prosecute as if he was on duty and in uniform

How can one be sure what badge is "flashed" is a genuine garda ID?

I Dont think that was a Garda if it was he needs a more active social life.

I would have ask for his name and badge number ( or whatever it is here) and just have rang the local station after to clarify with them. I would have also made a note of his reg.

If he isn't a member of the force so be it, take the "grief" then report him after and let them AGS deal with it.If he was a Guard then no harm done I suppose.

From a legal point of view, a garda is not obliged to provide either. He merely needs to identify himself as a member of AGS and produce his ID card, to let you know he has it(and the powers it carries).

No.
He merely needs to be in posession of it. How would you know what an ID card is supposed to look like?

Well if he doesn't have to give name or badge number, and you aren't entitled to read his Id card, what's stopping anyone from saying there a guard? Other than the law. They don't have to prove anything etc, I don't believe for a second a guard can just say "I'm a guard" and then you must do as he says (obviously within his powers)....

A few of my friends are Garda and I have seen there badges, nothing to them really. There in a case like this,

I dunno, weight up the situation in your head.

If you done something wrong and a Garda decided to have a word with you about it chances are it's a Garda.

If you done nothing wrong and someone is waving a badge around saying there a Garda chances are it's not a Garda.

From my teenage years, we got stopped by two undercovers. They just stopped us, Hi there, we are members of An Garda Síochána from whatever station, they showed us there badges, they didn't 'flash' them.
