I've been using Arctic Silver 5 for a long time and have had pretty good results. Other recommendations I regularly see are Arctic Cooling MX-4 and Arctic Silver's Céramique.

AS5 was good back in the day, but there are better solutions out there now. The below is widely regarded as the best thermal paste around at the moment, followed closely by MX-4 (I believe).

"Application: IC Diamond is composed mostly of diamond powder, and as such is quite thick. Proper application is critical to optimum performance. Squeeze onto the center of the CPU an amount of IC Diamond compound about the size of a pea - the center of the CPU is where most heat is concentrated. Place the heatsink on the CPU and push down to spread IC Diamond over the CPU's surface. Clamp the heatsink and power up the PC."

Interesting application method from that link. Most others tell you to spread evenly over the whole surface of the CPU before you attach the heatsink.

Spreading before hand is actually a bad way to do it. You can imagine it pretty easily on a larger scale; if you spread a certain area too thin, you'll end up with air pockets. Easier - and better - just to let the heatsink do the work.

I found the following pretty informative when I first saw it:

MX-2's great as well. I'm using it on one of my graphics cards at the moment.

+1 for IC7 Diamond. Other than exotic methods (like the whole Liquid metal pad doodads) it is the best TIM around. I use it exclusively and it can make a good few degrees difference, which might not seem much, but sometimes the difference between Stable and OMFGIMMELTINGWTF is a single degree.

Plus you can say My Computer is Now Diamonds.

I get mine from Canadia:

€7.50 with free shipping. Has enough for 2 or 3 applications.
