Best shop for demo'ing projectors

I am in the market for a projector at the moment. I am tempted by the Optoma HD20 (for price-to-performance reasons), but I want to see it in operation before making any decisions. What's the fan noise like, rainbow effects, contrast etc...

Are there any shops around that do demo's? I'd be willing to travel up north if necessary.

I could find nowhere before my first PJ purchase, you need to depend on friends/friends of friends unfortunately

To echo slaves comment, getting a PJ demo in Ireland is nigh on impossible unless you know somebody with one.

Just research as much as you can and buy blind but smart.

OK. Thanks. I don't know anybody with a projector at the moment. The only projectors I have ever used are at work!

Since I'll be buying at the entry level, I now that image quality won't be the best possible and I am happy to rely on reviews for that, but the thing I am most worried about is fan noise. Can anyone comment on the HD20's fan noise? I've read that it's louder than other, simialr, models.

I've never heard one myself so I can't really comment but I have an old Optoma HD70 and while you can hear it it is not too distracting. Just turn up your speakers to 11 and enjoy the huge image that it can dish out.....you won't be long forgeting about the fan.

How much does the HD20 retail for at the moment?

You can do some asking/investigating over here also: http://www.avforums.com/forums/projectors/

As already said once you are caught up in watching something fan noise will disappear !

I am looking at something like this too. Another option might be the Benq W1000+, in the same sort of price range. I have not seen this myself, but I hear very good reports.

Positioning of a projector in a location where there won't be too much incidental light seems to be very important.
