I'm starting a contract over there in June once I get my visa sorted. I know its a long way to travel, cold and rugged but can anyone that's been/is there fill me in on what to expect.

It can be warm enough in summer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakhalin#Climate

I get the impression its economically similar to Alaska, with a bit more agriculture. While its at about the same latitude as Ireland, its colder because of Arctic currents that we don't get.
