€300m marina plan has taken over our town

Latest update on the troubled harbour development.......

By Geraldine Gittens

Wednesday November 11 2009

Angry Greystones residents say a €300m development has "taken over" the town's beach and put wildlife at risk -- and have now protested to Europe.
The group, Concerned Citizens, say their voices were "not heard" on the marina development in the town, which is giving a facelift to the Victorian harbour.
The development will include a 230-berth marina, new retail facilities, including cafes and restaurants, 341 residential units and a new square with private parking.
Concerned Citizens say that they have now sent "hundreds" of signatures to the European Committee on Petitions voicing their concerns about the development, even though it was given approval by An Bord Pleanala last August 2007.
One citizen, who did not wish to be named, said: "People are going mad. We want it to be investigated and we have to bring it to Europe."
He added: "Various complaints and appeals have all fallen on deaf ears within Ireland, which is why we are making this petition to the European Parliament Committee.
Wicklow Co Council is adamant the development was granted approval after two rigorous oral hearings and a long period of deliberation by An Bord Pleanala.
But Concerned Citizens are calling for a public inquiry into An Bord Pleanala.
The group claims that the Greystones coastline is being subjected to destruction and is "being ripped apart" by mechanical diggers to make way for the residential units.
Their petition states that Greystones harbour and shoreline are "teeming with wildlife", all of which is seriously affected by the building projects.
However, Wicklow County Council says issues relating to the environment were dealt with at the hearings.

Jeez... A harbour thread! How original...

"hundreds" of signatures on a petition, the last resort of the desperate who have no other recourse. If those involved really believed in their cause, surely a legal challenge would have been more appropriate. But no, much better to send a list of name off. Better still to give anonymous quotes to a tabloid rag that will print any old rubbish.

What's next? Jooooooooe Duffeeeeeh...

How ironic when all of the posters on here are anonymous!!! and ditto!

Whatever about legal challenge, the mess at the harbour has lost us a load of tourists and not to mention the people who have to live at the harbour and look at the mess. and looking at reports from the objections and hearings, it was pointed out that the economy was on the way down but the EXPERT FG and FF councilors said they had allowed for this. looking at quotes a few weeks ago form derek mitchell, it looks like he still has his head up you know where, in seriuos denial of any problem.

Looks like a slow news week for the Herald. Looks like an article written 2 years ago and the date changed. Nothing new that people that live on the harbour are up in arms.

What imagination you show.
What facts have you that this is a troubled development ?
Get over it, it is happening.

Malheureusement the property crash has severly impacted in a negative way upon the financial justification of the development. Councillor Mitchell has admitted that the development will stop when the breakwaters are complete. In anymans language this development is indeed a "troubled development".

What a wonderful post. Apathy like yours is what allows us to be governed the way we are.
If you're bored of stuff like this why do you click on it, never mind posting replies.
If you have a view, tell us, otherwise, go elsewhere.

I don't really like where this is going and it will end up like the many harbour threads before.
