Never flown with them myself but I've been with one of their sister airlines China Southern that were excellent. Lovely new 777 and 737-800 with good in flight entertainment, good food and booze. I noticed there wasnt a single announcement from the cockpit though and on one internal flight, somebody smoked in the toilet which was pretty insane!

I flew with them once , NEVER EVER EVER EVER again

I flew a very tatty 747 combi from Frankfurt to Beijing rtn in 2004.

The service was horrible , the food , well we likened it to Gagh ( the Klingon food in Star Trek ) totally inedible

As for the service , this is the story I amuse my friends with.

We were watching the film ( Catch me if you can ) , 10 mins from the end the film stopped . I asked a steward what was happening we were watching this.
He said , ( or rather shouted ) NO FILM YOU EXCERSISE NOW , I started to laugh at him, he went purple in the face and screamed at us that we had to excersise right now . Of course we didn't we just tried to sleep.

The IFE was the old fashioned screens hanging from the ceiling

Anyway , let us know how you get on

Enjoy China , I always love visiting there its a great place !
My honest opinion AVOID them at all costs.

Are you flying Air China or China Airlines? Confusing, but they are two seperate airlines (and two seperate experiences!)

I've flown with Air China on domestic flights twice in the last 10 days. It was fine.

Both flights were on time, the food was edible, we got a newspaper, the staff were perfectly professional. And they gave me an exit seat from Hong Kong to Beijing so that's a bonus point for them!

Generally "OK" though I believe the AMS route is run with older 747's (so no in-seat on demand entertainment etc) - which might make a long flight seem longer.

Food/service is not as bad as some others - though like any airline this is very much an "on the day" thing.

Yeah they are decent enough, I got the same flight as you AMS to BKK, ended up upgrading to business class in AMS at the check in gate(€380) which wasn't great as it was more like premium economy but in fairness service was very professional.
