I know I need a dog licence, but why ?

What does a dog licence do, and why do I have to splash out my euros for one ?
Will the dog police come round and take my dog if I dont have one or what ?

Dog Licences

In order to obtain a dog licence, you must be over 16 years of age. It is an offence for you to keep a dog over 4 months old unless you have a licence. Your dog must be accompanied by and be under your effective control or the control of another responsible person if it is outside your home or premises or the home or premises of the person in charge of it. You can be requested by a dog warden to produce evidence of your dog licence and failure to do so can result in an on-the-spot fine. Failure to pay this fine within a specified period can result in prosecution by your local authority. Licences are not required for dogs in the possession of the County Council, the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Gardai, blind persons' guide-dogs, and any dog imported into the State for less than 30 days.

Dog licences are issued by your post office. The revenue from dog licences finances the operation of dog control services in local areas throughout the country.
Also "On-the-spot fine: €31.74 euro payable to your local authority" for not having a license.

Ah thanks for that 'star-pants'. I don't mind getting one if its going towards something good like dog control.

Ya i bought a licence, 3 years ago. The next year, they sent me a reminder letter, i couldn't ignore that. But last year, i didn't get a reminder letter. So if they ever pull me for it, ah sure i wasn't reminded. It can be an easy thing to forget, can't it?

I don't see why people wouldn't get one tbh, it's not a fortune, it goes towards good things and you don't have to pay a fine if you were caught.

I don't believe it goes towards anything good, and whilst I have licences for both dogs I think its another BS way of getting money from us.

Why dogs and not cats?. Or both, or pidgeons & tropical fish?.

Or we need a licence for horse's and donkeys?.

Do you have to carry this document with you anytime you walk your dog like a driving licence is to a car?

No, if your stopped you'll be asked to produce it.

Although I've never been stopped I did have the wardens call to the house in an attempt to intimidate me after I attended a protest against DCC's proposed ban on the dogs on the 'restricted breeds' list - indeed a few of us got a visit the following day.

The other two occassion was when a nosey neighbour reported I was letting two Pitbulls roam the streets!. Both those times the warden came down the dogs were with me in the front garden and my licences checked.

Get a harness for the dog and white stick for yourself and this should make you exempt from any dog license fee.
