hey

Don't know about where you are from but give these guys a bell - they're in Dublin but I;m sure they'd know someone closer to you.

www.teenbetween.ie

Ask them straight up - they've heard it all before.

There's an email address on that site if that suits you better to do it without being on the phone:
Locall: 1890 380 380 (might be expensive on your mobile though)/

Email: teenbetween@mrcs.ie

If your pc is in your room, move it to somewhere more public (come up with an excuse if needs be "prefer working down here where the telly is").....

At least try to reduce the amount of time you do look at it.... I find that the more full my life is, the less time I spend on the porn.... so, if I'm out exercising for an hour or so, I lose the urge to go online and look at stuff. Do you play sports? I was out doing my hobby for the last 4 days and it completely took my mind off it...

Best of luck - you will get through this and well done for seeking help.

Who diagnosed you with an addiction or was it self-diagnosis (i.e. not actually a diagnosis at all)? If you received a professional diagnosis I would suggest returning to the person who diagnosed you. If you believe you have a problem but have not received an actual diagnosis, your first port of call is probably your GP.

Porn Addiction

There are all sorts of addiction counsellors out there. i think they treat every addiction in the same fashion....be it eating, gambling, shopping the internet or porn, I think they try to see what you are trying to escape from! Might be expensive tho'

I can be quite fond of my porn but wouldn't say I'm addicted, I assume you masturbate to it, and then stop looking at it until you next want to relieve some pressure. Do you find yourself downloading/viewing more and more as the original material doesn't get you off? There's nothing wrong with watching porn and liking it, but don't let it take over your life. If you spend more than an hour a day at it, it's probably too much imo.

There is a Sex anonymous, in the same vain as Alcohol or narcotics etc etc.

google them, i don't think you can just walk into a meeting, you need to be introduced, but they will be numbers for you to call and lots and lots of support available. It is highly unlikely they will be a meeting near you, prob Galway, Dublin, Waterford etc.

don't worry about whether you are an addict or not of porn, get the help and talk to people. You can make that decision at another point.

The only other option i can think of them, is finding a counsellor in your area, which they will be lots in mullingar. they are free psychologist services available in towns, which is just a case of going registering for. Is going to your GP an option, at 17 anything you will say now should be private.

Op: I really feel for you. There are more and more people getting caught like this.

Try looking up www.quitpornaddiction.com There may be something helpful for you there or else try calling this group Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous: (Augustine Fellowship) in Ireland 01 6611289

The main thing is that you have to cut it out. Some other posters have suggested that using porn from time to time isn't so bad, or that using it for an hour per day isn't a problem. It seems to me that this isn't the right advice for you and that if you feel that your life is being ruined then you need to try to break away completely. Leaving the door open will only encourage the addiction.

As some have said, placing the computer in a public part of the house might help. Also, stay off the computer late at night.

Another tactic is to get some software that filters out porn sites. You may have to pay for this, I don't know. They are controlled by passwords, so it's not much help if you know the password. Is there somebody you know and trust that could set it up for you and not give you the password? Alternatively you could type in a random set of letters that you would forget. Getting this software and preventing yourself from knowing the password is the best thing you can probably do.

Also, if you have any dvds or magazines, throw them out. If you are determined to break the habit there's no point keeping them, and a reluctance to keep them would be a sign that deep down you're not really ready to give up yet.

If you are in any way religious and a Catholic, go to Confession and speak to the priest. They are very familiar with these kinds of problems and will treat them confidentially. Just going to confession will really give you a sense of relief. It doesn't matter if you can't remember what to do or say, just go in and speak to the priest.

Best of luck with this

(I'd appreciate it if there were no sarcastic comments about this last piece of advice. I give it in good faith; it may not be relevant for the OP but it is genuine advice and the OP might find it helpful).

Anyway, yeah it sucks.I remember when i was about the same age feeling that something was definitely wrong not because of the volume of porn but because I had basically covered every possible taboo I could think of and because I was completely de-sensitised. I remember sleeping during the day and watching porn at night.Eventually I just lost all feeling for the whole thing and about a year later I started to really worry.

Haven't really looked at porn in about 2 or 3 years now.I don't really need it. To be honest my head is probably too twisted and imagination to vivid for some porn director to compete at this stage. I guess it's more the psychological buzz than anything physical.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that you probably do have a problem and you should go and get help and you should go and tell them everything no matter how embarrased you are EXCEPT for anything that my jeoperdise you legally or your reputation as a sane person.
That sounds crazy but thats my universal answer to all lifes problems.

If you are religious, accept the same principles as a drug or a gambling addict would. Ask a higher power for help. Pray for Him to help you. It can really make a difference. Did you ever think of getting someone else to set parental control passwords on the PC or laptop that you use that you cannot change ?

Alright mate, I've had (and often have) the same problem as you. But you're only 17, your life isn't ruined by any means.

First step is to get away from the computer - it's the fact that the material is there and so easily accessed, that makes it so hard to break. If you only use the computer for recreation, get rid of it or get a console instead.

Is there anyway you could have a chat with a counsellor? It might be of use.

Hope you find some answers on here. I've seen this topic crop up a few times, but generally people on boards.ie are dismissive of it, with a general opinion being that unless you are doing it 10 times a day, it feels good, so what's the problem? I know and you know that it can have a major impact on your life.

Good luck mate.
