Medium Sized venue

Dublin doesn't seem to have a venue in between the size of the Point and the Ambassador. I'm talking about a venue that bands like New Order and Primal Scream could play.

When both these bands last played here they took on support slots to more popular bands both with disastarous results. If there was a venue the right size for them maybe they'd have played headline gigs and their fans could enjoy have enjoyed the gigs without Oasis/Chilis fans killing the atmosphere and even booing.

Wasnt all seated last time I was there. Its not that much bigger but i vaguely remember it as better then the ambassador. Why do bands never do more than one night anymore unless they are ultra crappy pop ones?

probably down to the fact that lesser known bands/acts rarely even sell out, and due to hectic touring schedules.

on that note.. Dj Shadows playing for two nights in the ambassador this weekend coming (sun/mon). and even with his crowd drawing potential i'd warrant the monday night won't sell out till that evening.

No its not. They hold tonnes of standing gigs there. I would say its prolly a bit bigger than the ambasador but not much. That said its a medium sized venue, as is the ambasador.

Tbh venues the size of both the Olympia and the Ambasador are the best size to see a band play in. Big enough to get a bit of atmosphere but small enough to retain a bit of intimacy.

Thats not the way it works. Bands dont not play their own concerts, opting instead for a support gig because they cant find a venue thats the right size for their fan base. If they could fill the olympia twice, then their promoters would put on two nights there. If they could only fill it one and a half times then they would only put on one night to keep demand high for their next gig.

Not necessarily. The Strokes could definitly have filled the olympia twice or even three times they only played one night. The tickets sold out really quickly.

New Order could
a) play 2 nights at a small venue and still probably have some people miss out on tickets.
or
b) play one night to a much bigger audience supporting The Chilis and make more money for less work.

Promoters are businesses the way it works is whichever way makes them the most money.

The Strokes are a relativly new band (circa a year in the spotlight) as far as being anyway famous goes so their promoters were probably being cautious. How do you know they would have filled the olympia twice or three times?

Thats a completely different argument than your original question which was about venue size.

That aside, of course promoters are businessmen but it would be very poor business managment for a promoter to go for the quick buck and just do the support gig because its more money now*. Very short sighted.

*Assuming that the band would get more money for supporting a band in the Point than they would for running their own gig in a smaller venue.

Gimp Fanning released information that ticketmaster had had about 4 times the capasity of the Olympia inquiring for tickets.

I heard Vicar Street is being renovated and its capacity increased to 1200. That'll prolly make it the best mid-sized venue in Dublin imo
