Moving out of the old homestead for the first time soon - to rent, so obviously don't have any letters of references from previous landlords. What can I do about this situation? Are work references acceptable?

Dont worry about it.
Most landlords are just looking for decent , honest people. They will not be overly hung up on previous tenancies.
Just look respectable, make it clear that you can afford the rent on an on-going basis.
A work reference would not go astray tho'.
