There was also the water safety ad with the man in a canal or river and instructions on how to use your jacket(denim!) to reach out to him.

That was probably the seventies.

I've seen it, but then again, maybe they were just still using it 15 years later.

Was Dinny in it?

Anyone remember the ad for fire-safety in the home where the couple do the 30s hollywood song & dance number called 'Your bedtime routine', where they prance around the house at bedtime turning off lights, putting out cigarettes and closing doors?

I particularly liked the bit where they stop and sing meaningfully into eachothers' eyes 'fires can start in oh-so many waayyss'

Also the soap operas started to take on these socially responsible messages too. The first was a hospital soap on BBC called 'Angels' based on nurses at St. Angela's Hospital (merrily ripped off by C4's 'No Angels' series!) where the nation's attention was drawn to the perils of eating red kidney beans (RKBs) that hadn't been boiled for the requisite 10mins to kill toxins.

half a ward of nurses ended up in their own hospital after eating chili-con-carne with the offending RKBs in it - I had to ask what was an RKB and what was chili-con-carne... my mum just replied 'oh you wouldn't like it! -
aka: 'I wouldn't cook that foreign muck if you paid me' (she's much better these days).

A rather twisted moral of the story could be: don't eat that weird continental food and you won't go wrong'
