We recently moved to Paris but we have kept our Irish car. We did some sums and decided it would be cheaper than renting every time we come home, also we have an apartment in Santry which we're renting out that has an extra underground parking space so it's really handy for the airport (when we do come home we spend most of our time in Carlow).

Anyway, as our current policy is about to expire does anyone know of the most cost-efficient way to insure in our circumstances? I read (somewhere) about low-mileage insurance and that it can be much cheaper if mileage is under 5K per year. Does anyone know of any companies that provide this type of insurance?

I'd say ring them all up, tell them your situation and ask for a quote. If the car is laid up in a car park (even if it's private) for long periods, they may not be mad about TPF&T insurance, but TPO shouldn't kill you, especially if you insure it in the female partner's name.

You could sell your car and buy one >30 years old. Vintage tax is nothing and vintage insurance is very cheap and is usually mileage limited! Worth thinkin about if you can't get what you're lookin for with your current motor! Remember because of the vintage tax & insurance being so cheap, you're not limited by engine size, so a 3L 1975 Merc might be ok!
