Please insert a Playstation format disc - help needed

I just bought Action Replay Max and the bloody thing won't load on my slim PS2. I keep getting the feckin' Please insert a Playstation format disc message, its drivin me crazy. All I wanna do is upload a PES4 option file onto my memory card but its just not happening.
Its actually load once for me, but as I selected one of the options the disc fault message appeared. I've tried turning off the PS2 and rebooting it about 50 times now and no luck. I've searched around for possible solutions but I can't find any. I've even cleaned the lens and all that.
I'm guessing my PS2 is having trouble reading blue cd-r's or something because thats the Action Relpay format.
Any ideas as to what I should do?
Thanks

Did Sony not implement some "feature" on the slim Ps2s that stopped it working with Action Replay stuff like that, memory card expanders etc.? Did you try removing all of the memory cards etc. before inserting the disc?

I bought one today and it works in my slim PStwo but it does seem to be very slow. Like, after the PS2 boot screen disappears, it waits for about 10 seconds with a black screen while the disc is whirring and nothing else happening. It's also frozen twice (out of four times used) while transferring my game saves from memory card to USB drive, resulting in a LOSS OF SAVE GAMES!

I think it's a piece of crap, and i'm going to return it, and go looking for a sharkport (american version of x-port). If only the software that came with my x-port would work on an american PStwo
