    Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows what this place specialises in, if anything at all. I've a few placements there over the next couple of weeks but I've never heard of it before. Wouldn't mind knowing a bit about it before I get there.

Any info appreciated! Thanks in advance

Its a rehab hospital linked to the Mater for people over 65. Many of those who go there have had stroke or fractured bones, or they may just be frail and would benefit from intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy input to help them improve.

a few friends we're trying to teach the old people a course in health and wellbeing (and still are at the moment). although it's not really working because they all just want to chat with them when they arrive and tell them they're life story, not learn about what foods to eat etc even if it is practically oriented, most don't have the concentration or motivation for it. but they seem to get a lot out of the visits espcially those who don't get many other vistors.

have worked there myself, in the Day Hospital for a community based placement. Jesus it was busy. When I was there about 2 years ago the DH at least was very understaffed but was great. The Nurse Manager there was a legend, the clients loved the place. Don't be put off by the look of it, it looks old and clapped out, but i've heard good things about the levels of care etc

The day hospital must be very different to the rest of the hospital then.

My dad was there for several weeks recuperating from a serious illness and I can honestly say that the standard of care in Mary's was the worst that I have ever seen in any hospital. It wasn't just a matter of being understaffed; it was badly organised and in some cases, simply inept.

No nurses would be seen on the ward for hours on end. There were a number of days during his stay where we saw the ward cleaner more than we saw any actual nurse or doctor. There were no bells for the patients to call for help if they needed to go to the bathroom or anything like that (and with so many old people, that was much-needed). Strict dietary restrictions (in this case, PKU and diabetes) were simply ignored, despite the consequences.

It doesn't just look old and clapped out, it is. The building is horrible. It has shades of an industrial school, with the high ceilings, wooden walls and bad heating.

There were about a gazillion other things wrong with the place but I'm going to leave it before I start ranting. Suffice to say, it was a horrible place and we had to fight hard to get my dad transferred out of there as soon as we realised just how bad it was.
