Easy update news section

currently building a website for a friend. and i want to include a news section that can be easily updated by the user without dreamweaver, but not looking for a complicated blog, any suggestions?

Depends on how simple you want to go. Very first website I did, I used a simple text file as the content, which the user could update, then a batch file to ftp it to a certain place on the server which was then read by php

Not exactly
secure (password stored in plaintext in the batch file),

maintainable (better not change the structure of the page, it will totally mess it up), or

customisable (plain text only please)

but it still managed to fulfil the requirements
