Hi There, I'm a patient of Mr Brian Hurson, however I would like to get a second opinion on knee surgery. My GP has put forward three consultants.

    1. Mr Paul Macnamee-Charlemount Clinic
    2. Mr Gary Fenlon-Blackrock Clinic
    3. Mr Fergal McGoldrick-Blackrock Clinic

    I'd appreciate if anyone can relay any experiences they have had with these consultants.;

    Thanks in advance,

I'm getting an ACL Reconstruction in July,
Surgeons name is Mr Ray Moran, out in Beaumont Private
I have talked to a couple of phsyio friends and they all agree he is one of the best, if not the best in the country, I know he has done work on Padraig Harrington's knee, so he must be held in high regard.

    3. Mr Fergal McGoldrick-Blackrock Clinic

    I'd appreciate if anyone can relay any experiences they have had with these consultants.;

    Thanks in advance,

I underwent keyhole surgery with McGoldrick back in November. Had to have some general wear and tear repaired and some cartilage removed from my left knee. Found him very knowledgeable and professional, and the turnaround was fantastic. 1 week after my initial appointment I had the surgery.

Back playing football now and while there's still stiffness and pain afterwards he said that was to be expected initially. Before I had the surgery I couldn't even run for more than 10 yards without breaking down.

i would highly reccomend Brian Hurson as he was my surgeon and he has a great support team as well. Where are you getting the operation cappagh?

He was Roy Keane's surgeon as well or so i heard

Hurson did a grand job on my knee (an ACL recon), however my mum went to him for a consultation and they did not get on... at all...
McGoldrick did her knee replacement, but she didnt do her physio properly so knee still isnt great. More likely to be her fault than his I reckon.

Had ACL reconstruction with Gary Fenlon about 10 years ago and everything worked out fine. Had a subsequent carthilage problem in the other knee called a bucket handle tear and returned to Fenlon but he referred me on to Ray Moran in Beaumont who did an excellent job.

If its ACL recon its important you do the physio and exercises after the op if its to be a success.

Hurson repaired my Acl and it is fine now. Back playing football with no ill affects. There was some pain for couple of weeks after operation. Interestingly my friend had same op but was able to walk around after a couple of days. however when he went to play rugby the cruciate tore again

I had acl recon with Mr. Moran about 5 years ago on my left leg and it went like a dream. I took the next appointment which happened to be semi - public private and the operation was in Cappagh Hospital. Hospital were great and had phsyio there regularly until I returned to sports after about 6 months.

2 years ago I blew out my right acl and went back to Mr. Moran, I took the next appointment which was all private in a hospital in Mullingar. They took a lot of money off me, on the way in and as soon as I woke up early the next morning, they kicked me out. They didn't care if I was comfortable or in pain, they just wanted rid of me. They didn't clean it properly and right enough it got infected which hampered my progress for a while because the wound would not seal. I was a bit slack on the physio front ( because I had to organise it myself ) which was a big mistake. Basically I made it back to sport after about 10 months but it was not smooth.

What have I learned. Well :

    - Ray Moran is excellent ( I'm sure the other main guys are as well ) , really knows his stuff and has a decent bedside manner, but as he told me - succeeding is only 20% him and 80% yourself. Don't think that he will do the surgery and thats it.

    - If you are going private, you are on your own, so don't assume that someone is looking out for you, it's up to you to take control and organise the care you need. In the initial few weeks after the op, don't neglect the wound and make sure you are getting the right physio direction to keep an eye on it.

    - Read up on it, there's loads on the internet

    - work hard on the rehab ( safely )

He did my ACL reconstruction and I found him fine was seen promptly and was happy with it. I did have some trouble with hamstring tears when i went back training (from trauma of taking the graft )

Absolutely spot on, hard work before if possible will also help a great deal.

    Hi,

Just wondering if anybody has any experience of what the consultant Paul McNamee is like (subject of original post)? MRI results have just confirmed that i have torn my ACL completely.

I believe the waiting list for Ray Moran is now 12 weeks - that's just for an appointment.

I only have to wait until 5th January to see Paul McNamee - he is with bon securs in glasnevin - Should i be concerned that the waiting time is so short?

Any information would be greatly appreciated,

    Thanks!

hi guys i have to have acl surgery my doctor name is dr k. mahalingham he is indian if you know about this doctor could you pls give me some advice thank you all

I was referred to him the last time I dislocated my knee cap (happened twice) he was recommending surgery as a possibility (very small possibility it has to be said) and to stop playing rugby, my last appointment I was referred to an Orthapedic (sp) specialist in the CUH called Richardson I think, he diagnose the problem better ruled out surgery unless it happens again and explained I didnt have to give up rugby but suggested I do to eliminate the surgery in the long run.

    Hi,

I have done my ACL playing Rugby before Xmas and went to A&E in Naas on the day.
They then booked me in for an appointment in their Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic (Dr Mc Elwain) and then refered me for an MRI. MRI result confirmed that my ACL was gone and that i would also need key hole surgery to remove some cartillage first.
They then referred me to his clinic in Tallaght and got an appointment for the key hole surgery. I presume it will be his team.
I suppose once that's done, i'll have to go back to Tallaght for the ACL surgery.

Does anyone know a good surgeon in Tallaght?

Do i have to stick with that consultant or can i request a specific surgeon?

2 of my friends have been to him. One of them has has 3 ACL operations on his knees and the other guy has had one. They have recommended him to me as i'm experiencing alot of pain in my knee since i started back training a few weeks ago

McNammee is excellent. I was reffered to him by another OS who those I had damaged cartilage, the physio thought similar, but after analysing the knee and the MRI he noticed some small things that wernt adding up. it turned out I had an almost completely torn ACL that could require surgery, he reccommended surgery but gave me other options and completely explained all the paths that could be taken and the repercussions that could result from each one, at no point forcing me into surgery (which would of been to his profit)...

anyway, im booked in for the operation for march 4th, Ill report back then!

Ray Moran is one of the Best in Europe not alone Ireland. He has other surgeons come in on his operations to see how its done proberly. Be advised though not all ops go well. I would be also extremely concerned about getting a good physio for the rehab after surgery
as this is equally as important

I'm not happy with this thread. We are not a medical/surgeon's review forum.

LUIE46, neither do we give medical advice. I'd suggest you see your doctor sooner.
