    Hi,

Some kind individual decided to remove my wing mirror from my car on Saturday, so I'm looking for a silver electrically adjusted wing mirror for a MK4 golf. I only need the housing for it, the rest is working and attached.
Anyone got any phone numbers for breakers yards in and around dublin.I've tried google but no luck
    thanks

Summerhill Spares. Used to be in Santry but they moved down the road to the Malahide Road I think. Probably the most well organised breakers in Dublin. Phone number is (087)2339558.

    Good luck.

    Hey kaiser,
Have a similar tail of woe, I've a mini cooper (old school) and someone decided to relieve me of one of my bullet wing mirrors. Then a week or 2 later someone tried to bend my wiper out of shape:eek: it really infuriates me that theres nothing I can do about this kind of vandalism and there's no point in reporting it as it's sporadic!! Just needed to vent

Just an update on Summerhill Spares. They've moved to Unit 3, Newtown Ind. Est. Located behind the Newtown House in Colock. I found them very helpful and if you ring first, they should be able to tell you as to whether they have the part. The main number is 01 8673232 and they are open 9 - 6 Mon to Fri and 9 - 1 on saturday. I see they now offer a part fitting service. The part I needed was 270 new from the main VW dealer and I got it from them for 30. They also told me how to remove the old one and fit the new part; hidden screws behind the seals and all that. I thought they deserved a plug for being so helpful.

Have to agree - very helpful lads especially if you have an issue fitting the part yourself, drop them a line and they help as best they can.

Find that very hard to believe WillyD, I've been there 3 times in the last month and they have been nothing but professional, courteous and extremely helpful.

    Hi,
Over the weekend some teenagers thought it would be fun to smash my back and passenger windows and subsequently I am having ALOT of trouble finding replacement glass. The problem is I'm driving a Toyota Cynos and with Toyota not making it anymore its proving very difficult to find the glass!! If anyone has any ideas where I might be able to source some I would be very grateful.

I've used Summerhill Spares a couple of times. They have a lot of stock and the prices are usually okayish, but they don't test all the parts that they sell.
I bought an alternator from them recently and, when I asked if they'd tested it, the guy said "ah we would have, yeah". Turns out it was useless, so I came back the next day and got a replacement which still had the power connector in the socket, with the lead simply hacked off - obviously not tested either or the old lead wouldn't be left in.

Asking almost 50 quid for a 16 year old untested alternator is a bit much IMO, but at least they probably have whatever parts you need.

Which scrapyard did you find the torque converter at? That doesn't sound too bad. I've heard that if almost any part of my Micra's CVT gearbox ever goes, it'll cost more to replace than the car itself did... although it seems to have an electromagnetic clutch rather than a torque converter (if the engine speed is just above normal idle, say 1000 rpm, it kind of 'ticks' forward in very small jerks, every second or so).
Would be good to find a place which doesn't completely gouge for parts.

I could never understand vandalism. I spend my life designing, building, and fixing things. On a very few occasions, in extreme frustration, I have felt like breaking something, but have resisted the temptation, especially knowing that I'd only have to fix it again anyway !.

IMO, alternator faults are almost always the regulator, rectifier, or 'brush'. Components are available on eBay ... the recondition people, for obvious reasons, rarely sell the bits.
Again, IMO, it is worth having a set of spares around .. they don't take up much room, although replacing the rectifier does need a soldering iron, and the ability to use it.

Agreed here; I did check continuity and resistance which were fine (which I think indicates that the brushes were ok) - maybe one of the diodes in the rectifier blew, although it went from apparently working fine to absolutely not working at all quite quickly.

Left the old one in the shed, in the optimistic hope that one day I'll have the time and knowledge to know what to do with it ;) I do have a soldering iron and (rudimentary) soldering skill, just don't have enough electronics knowledge. :)

Can you get replacement doors at those places? I have a few rust spots on a common van and might need to replace them. Any ideas?
