Motion passed, no objections no vote needed.

Great news. But people need to keep campaigning to make sure this practice is outlawed for the duration, lest it's foisted on another area.

Basically the councillors now will lobby Pat Rabbitte for a 5 year moratorium. The decsion making is based in central governement on licencing so this campaign continues. What it means is that the issue is 'mainstreamed' in that our local public representatives are walking alongside us on this. This is good for morale but we cannot get complacent and need to keep momentum for a national moratorium and/or ban.

Quite a comprehensive article and a good piece of journalism by John Mulligan in the Irish Independent, farming section Tuesday. Worth keeping the responses and comments coming in so as to priortise the area for the paper (maybe even journalist) to cover in the future.

    Its all happening!
    http://www.thejournal.ie/donegal-and-sligo-become-latest-local-authorities-to-ban-fracking-329929-Jan2012/

But most importantly if people can show their support on this.
In a reaction to Sligo and Donegals County Council's decision to ban Fracking , Richard Moorman has asked to be on Ocean FM on Wed. morning between 9am and 10am on the Niall Delaney show. We have heard in advance that he has been highly critical of the decision and undermining of the community movement behind it. We are calling on all those who can to contact the station to show their support and thanks for the Council's decision, and to let all other decision makers know just what a popular movement (crossing all the divides and borders) the antifracking movement is with genuine concerns. You can email the show at niall.delaney@oceanfm.ie . Txt 0833500530. Call and leave a message on 0719118100. This can be done all day Wednesday and not just during the programme.

The Realities of Hydraulic Fracturing” – Dr. John O’Connor
“Fracking Inhumanity” – Jessica Ernst MSc

Thursday February 23rd at 8pm Bush Hotel, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim
Friday February 24th at Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim, The Rainbow (Ballroom
    of Romance) at 8pm

A series of presentations on the potential impact of hydraulic fracturing, or ‘Fracking’ will take place in Dublin, Sligo, Fermanagh and Leitrim next week.
Dr. John O’Connor and Jessica Ernst, M.Sc., will travel from Canada to
address key issues in relation to the practice of Fracking, and to
address public concerns in relation to the proposed extraction of
shale gas in the North West using this controversial method.

Both speakers will reveal their first-hand experiences of hydraulic
fracking in Canada, and will outline their concerns regarding the processes involved, as the debate continues here over the granting of
    licenses.
Ms. Ernst is a biologist and environmental consultant to the oil and gas industry, and long time critic of the method of Fracking in use in
    Alberta, Canada.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xRQt3Q0xPc

Dr. O’Connor is a Irish born physician who came to prominence for
highlighting the increased cancer rates downstream from Canada’s
largest Tar Sands operations. The Alberta Cancer Board confirmed the higher incidences, after Health Canada and the Alberta College of Physicians spent time, and resources, denying the facts , and attempting to discredit Dr. O’Connor’s observations. Dr. O’Connor was vindicated completely by the Alberta College of Physicians, but no study to date, has yet been implemented, despite the Cancer Board’s recommendations. With first-hand experiences of living in rural communities where Fracking, and heavy drilling takes place, their insight into industry practices promises to be both informative and timely.

Watched the documentary Gasland on tv. I had been neither pro or against as I didn't know too much about it. Have to say I was shocked to see the desperate situation that people were in due to the pollution generated by the fracking processes. They were getting sick and had to source clean water for drinking, washing and cooking. Their water wells were polluted by chemicals. I didn't realise fracking used so many chemicals in the process. As one farmer showed his beef living and eating in the polluted area that was his farm - he pointed out that some time later they will end up as steak on someone's plate complete with all the chemicals they have ingested over their lifetime. While I know this documentary was made to show the damage caused by fracking I was very moved by the plight of the people living in its shadow. They are trapped there as who would buy property in an area like that.
It has certain similarities with the building industry here that made huge profits but left a torrent of human misery in its wake. :(

Tamboran Resources is proposing to extract the gas [in Leitrim] using a process known as 'Fracking' but critics say the method of drilling they wish to use is unsafe. Senator Susan O'Keeffe and Doctor Tony Bazley join us to discuss the issue in more detail.

Sen. O'Keefe seems pretty intelligent and very concerned. Tony on the other hand came across as very nervous. Visibly shaking and stuttering. He's either camera-shy or he's hiding something. It's usually the latter, when it comes to oil/gas industry folks.

I thought Mark Cagney did quite well (no pun intended) with the questions.

    Hot off the press

Study shows air emissions near fracking sites may impact health

Much of the focus to date has been on water

    http://www.physorg.com/news/2012-03-air-emissions-fracking-sites-impact.html
The report, based on three years of monitoring, found a number of potentially toxic petroleum hydrocarbons in the air near the wells including benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene and xylene. Benzene has been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a known carcinogen. Other chemicals included heptane, octane and diethylbenzene but information on their toxicity is limited.

Lecture tomorrow by visiting German expert on fracking.

How Public opinion and the media have turned against FRACKING in Germany’

Helmut Fehr, Geoscientist and German Green Party councillor will give a presentation in the Rainbow Ballroom Glenfarne on the topic of ‘How Public opinion and the media have turned against FRACKING in Germany’. Last August Helmut spoke to a crowded house in Drumshanbo, about his experiences in Westphalia where the community learnt gradually how to interpret the language of the companies to be able to gain a full picture of the process. In his last seminar helmut gave further stark warnings that are relevant to Ireland. He spoke of how the companies engage the politicians with promises of tax revenues and jobs, promises he expressed were empty as it meant displacing other jobs.
Helmut Fehr is an ambassador of a model to ensure that there is proper public particpation in decesion making concerning this technique. There is currently a moratorium in place in Westphalia.

Get an opportunity to hear his first hand experience and make your own mind up.
Lecture will be followed by a questions and answer session.

In Ballroom of Romance, Glenfarne, Co. Leitrim on Mon Apr 2nd at 7.30pm.
    Entry Free.
