“MUNICH’S WORLD CUP: A NEW RECORD” MR. SCHREIBER SAID
    20110609_Munich-record.jpg
Almost 900 Rifle & Pistol athletes will be competing in Munich from the 16 through the 23 of June

“Numbers are incredible!” The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said about the entries recorded for the 2011 ISSF Rifle & Pistol World Cup in Munich, which is going to kick off the next 16th of June.

884 athletes coming from 85 nations have already registered to take part in the competition, for a total 1485 starts.

The competition, which will be conducted on the lines of the lines of the 1972 Olympic Shooting Range of Munich from the 16 through the 23 of June, is going to become a milestone on the qualification path to the 2012 London Games: a total of 24 Olympic Quota Places will indeed be awarded in the 10 rifle and pistol events.

“Munich’s is one of the largest venues of the world. But the numbers of this world cup are still impressive” Mr. Schreiber said.

“It’s a record, no doubt about it. Never before, a Rifle & Pistol World Cup Stage registered this participation”.

You Mean World Cup 2011 :D. Would be something else to go there even as a spectator. I'm sure one would "make bits of the Visa card" at the trade stands. mmmmm Rink Grip for the GSP :) Fitted to my hand in person. Oh heck. Just get the new SSP with the fitted Rink grip ;);)

I went to the world championships as a spectator last year. It is just beyond comprehension, and the range complex in Munich is just incredible. I'm going back out on friday helping out with our team and looking forward to it immensely. Needless to say, pennies have been put away to lay waste to those trade stalls. Fear not Kryten. ;)

Those stalls are always dangerous things! I try to avoid if at all possible - I need to eat! :D

Need a new sling, and my glove has seen better days, and I might look at new frames, and... so on and so forth. :p

Well, the last time I went to Munich was 2001. I walked into the Anschutz tent.

I finally finished paying off the loans in 2007...

    From the ISSF website:
ISSF Rifle & Pistol World Cup opened in Munich
    20110617_Opening.jpg
890 athletes coming from 86 countries will compete in the 2011 ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage which kicked off today at the 1972 Olympic Shooting Range of Munich, through the 23rd of June.

A record number of 1482 starts (with athletes competing in multiple events), makes of this competition the biggest ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage ever.

Athletes from all around the world will compete in the 10 Olympic events of Rifle and Pistol shooting, aiming at the 24 Olympic Quota Places to be awarded here. This is indeed one of the last chances to qualify for the 2012 London Games, before the continental championships.

The first medal matches, the 10m Air Rifle Men and Women finals, will take place tomorrow afternoon, starting from 2 PM (German time, GMT+1)

“Numbers are incredible!” The ISSF Secretary General Franz Schreiber said, commenting on the turnout of athletes of the fourth and last Rifle and Pistol World Cup Stage of the year.

“Munich’s is a big range, one of the best shooting sport venue of the world, but even here we are on the edge. It’s the first time that we record such a high participation in a world cup stage, since the series was launched in 1986.” Mr. Schreiber added.

The 2011 ISSF World Cup Series travelled from Sydney (AUS) to Changwon (KOR), passing through Fort Benning (USA) before landing here in Munich, where the last Rifle and Pistol Stage is conducted. The ISSF World Cup Series will then be closed in September, with the Rifle and Pistol World Cup Final taking place in Wroclaw, Poland.

10m Mens Air Rifle is underway at the moment, 130 entries, Jozef Gonci in the lead with 599, nearest finished competitor is on 598 and only one other shooter has a realistic chance of matching him.

Ray shot well, matched his domestic performance from this weekend and broke the Irish record for a score in an ISSF match of 583 (which he set in Intershoot in February)

Ha! And in the time it took to write that up, Zhu shot a 599 and equalled Gonci's score :D
(Though he loses the first place on the number of inner tens shot)

edit: Hm, that's wierd, Zhu's not in the final ranklist. Some wierd glitch of some kind maybe. Live results showed him shooting a 599 and maybe even beating Gonci on countback...

Yeah, it looks like the ranklist is for relay one only (too many shooters for a 100-firing point airgun hall! Feck!). Top eight going on to the finals from both relays are:
    1|2|ZHU Qinan|CHN|100|100| 99|100|100|100|599
    2|1|GONCI Jozef|SVK|99|100|100|100|100|100|599
    3|2|RIZOV Anton|BUL|100| 99|100|100| 99|100|598
    4|1|WANG Tao|CHN|100|100|100|100| 98|100|598
    5|2|SIDI Peter|HUN|100|100|100|100| 98| 99|597

edit: Scrap the bottom there there, they're holding a shoot off. Three places in the finals, 9 shooters on 596 in a shoot-off for the three places...

Gary is through the elimination, just, with a 585. Had a wind flag across his target in the last string. Never helps. :D

    Big day tomorrow.

Well done to Ray in the AR, good performance.

Word is that the conditions for the shoot this morning in prone were awful - and with Martynov shooting a 594 and Gonci a 589 and Potent missing the target completely on his last shot, I can well believe it.
For Floydster to make it to the Quals under those conditions is a job very well done!

They have taken my shoe laces off me and by belt!!, that was poor!:(, only saving grace is its an MQS!

Big thats to Joe, Dave F. and the crew out here in Munich for all the help!!;) and to the NTSA for getting us out to these events!!;)

    From the ISSF website:
World’s best 50m Rifle Prone shooter is Belarus’ Martynov
    20110620_FR60PRwinner_001.jpg
Martynov won his second world cup gold medal of the year climbing from the second place, and secured his leadership atop of the world ranking. Denmark’s Nielsen followed him securing a Quota, while the home shooter Brodmeier closed the match in third. The second Olympic Quota went to Switzerland’s Marcel Buerge, fourth today.

The World’s #1 Rifle Prone shooter, the two-time world champion Sergei Martynov of Belarus, won today’s 50m Rifle Prone Men at the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Munich.

Shooting on one of his favourite ranges in the world – here Sergei had won the 2010 ISSF World Championship, last August - Martynov started the medal hurdles in second place, after qualifying for the final with 598 points.

Climbing up with a series of excellent scores, he moved in the lead after the sixth shot, when he gained one tenth of advantage over his closest opponent, Germany’s Brodmeier.

Shooting a great 10.8 on his eighth final shot, and then closing the match with a 10.7, Martynov recorded the highest score in the final – 105.3 points – and the highest total – 703.3 points – winning his second World Cup Gold of the season.

Just three weeks ago, the Belarusian shooter had equalled the 600-point world record for the seventh time in his career, at the ISSF World Cup in Fort Benning, where he eventually pocketed a Silver.

Since he started competing, back in 1986, Martynov has been winning two World Championships, five ISSF World Cup Finals and twenty-nine ISSF World Cup medals. Standing as one of the most titled rifle shooters of the world, he participated in four Olympic editions, winning two Bronzes.

Now, with this incredible series of positive results, he’s approaching to the 2012 London Olympic Games, aiming to win the only trophy missing from his medal showcase: the Olympic Gold.

Finishing in second behind the unreachable Martyniov, it was another Danish shooter who finished in the spotlights, today. Kenneth Nielsen, 43, climbed from the seventh place and nailed the Silver medal with an overall score of 701.4 (598+103.4) points securing an Olympic Quota Place, the second qualification spot won by the Danish team at this competition after the Quota pocketed by Anette Jensen at yesterday’s 10m Air Rifle Women event.

Climbing to the second place, Nielsen disappointed the home shooter Daniel Brodmeier, a 23-year old German athlete ranked 41st in the world in this event. The young finalist had entered today’s match in the lead, with an almost-perfect qualification score of 599 points and with one point of advantage on Martynov and Nielsen. Not enough to secure the leadership. Scoring 102.2 points throughout the ten-shot final, Brodmeier landed indeed in third place, wearing the Gold medal with an overall score of 701.2 points.

It was Switzerland’s Marcel Buerge who followed him in fourth place. The 39-year old shooter - a three-time 300-meter world champion - walked into the final with a qualification score of 598 points. Then, shooting 102.9 points he landed in fourth place with a total score of 700.9 points. Enough to pocket an Olympic Quota Place, an entrance ticket to the next 2012 Olympic Games in London.

A young first time medallist, Austria’s 21-year old Thomas Mathis, took the fifth place with 700.7 (598+102.7) points, followed by the French flag bearer, Paris’ Valerian Sauveplane, a current world record holder ranked fourth in the world in this event, who landed in sixth place with 700.2 (597+103.2) after qualifying for the final match through a shoot-off.

Russia’s Olympic multi-medallist Sergei Khadjibekov, 41, closed the match in seventh with 699.3 (598+101.3) points, followed by Belarus’ Yury Shcherbatsevich, 26, eighth with 698.2 (598+100.2) points.

Lovely shot of the Munich airgun hall taken by Don McIntosh (the Scottish coach):

50 firing points per side, all on suis ascor electronic targets. This is currently regarded as one of, if not the, best airgun ranges in the world.

And Michelle Smith just set a new British record with an 8th place finish in the Women's 3P match on 585...

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,055 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

And Ray Kane just set another new Irish record in Mens 3-Position Rifle, with 1124 beating FLOYDSTER's 1998 record of 1121!
Ray may yet make it past elimination - he's lying in 19th place now, but as others finish, depend on how close to perfect they shoot, that could fall as low as 52nd, and the cutoff is 38th place...

    From today's Independent:
Men of this calibre need financial support
    Wednesday June 22 2011

I'D like to congratulate Ray Kane on setting a new Irish record of 584 in Men's Olympic Air Rifle at the World Cup in Munich on Saturday.

Perhaps the Irish Sports Council will see fit to support his sporting endeavours in the run-up to the London Games, since target shooting is one of the few Olympic sports we have a realistic chance of medalling in and which is currently unsupported by the Sports Council.

    Yours, etc

Also, the Examiner rang about the same topic, they're going to do a small piece on Ray and Gary and Peter after the letter got their attention (the NTSA is handling the PR for that as it's a National Team thing).

Very interesting interview with Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooter who won his country's first ever Olympic gold medal at the games in Beijing - Indian shooting is of interest to us because their sport is in almost exactly the same position as ours is in terms of how it's treated by the government and their version of the sports council, it has similar challanges in terms of training high-level shooters and so on (http://www.IndianShooting.com makes for an interesting read):

Just a little footage of Peter Friend during the qualifications for 10m Air Pistol.

It was great to see a big turnout of supporters from Ireland and a good buzz around the team. Well done to Ray, Gary and Peter.
